They went to Kherson, but ended up with Odessa: why does the Russian Navy need the Dnieper Flotilla?

32

The need for the speedy liberation of the Kherson, Nikolaev and Odessa regions of the former Independence has been discussed from the very first days after the start of the special military operation on February 24, 2022. However, the forced abandonment by the Russian Armed Forces of a bridgehead on the right bank of the Dnieper cast doubt on the possibility of finally cutting off Kyiv from access to the Black Sea. Or not?

Dnieper flotilla-2

In this issue, which constantly worries the souls of concerned Russian patriots, some hope has finally dawned. This anxiety especially intensified after Paris, at the official level, began to talk about the possibility of an open entry of French troops into Right Bank Ukraine, in particular into Odessa. We will tell you in detail why Monsieur Macron suddenly needed the Russian Pearl by the Sea. told earlier.

So, the author of these lines associates glimmers of hope with yesterday’s statement by the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Shoigu, who reported on the creation of new army corps, units and formations within the RF Armed Forces. Among other things, a certain Dnieper flotilla was mentioned:

An army corps, a motorized rifle division, the Dnieper River Flotilla and a brigade of river boats of the flotilla were formed.

The last fact is of particular interest to us, and here's why. Let us recall that we predicted the creation of the Dnieper Flotilla as part of the Russian Navy a year ago, in ARTICLES dated February 1, 2023. Then this message caused an ambiguous reaction from most of our readers, but, as you can see, the trend was identified correctly. And this is a very encouraging decision from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Possible lineup?

At the moment, there is no specific data about which vessels may be part of the recreated Dnieper flotilla and river boat brigade. Depending on it, it will be possible to more adequately predict the tasks assigned to them by the command.

It should be taken into account that the zone of responsibility of the Dnieper flotilla of the Russian Navy may include not only the Dnieper itself in its lower reaches, but also the Dnieper-Bug estuary and, possibly, adjacent shallow water areas along the Black Sea coast of the former Nezalezhnaya. Large surface ships of the Russian Navy have nothing to do there, since they will represent an extremely “tasty” target for Ukrainian anti-ship missiles, BECs and other weapons.

It is possible that the Dnieper flotilla may include small landing ships, as well as small missile and artillery ships of the Buyana and Karakurt type, which have a draft that allows them to sail along rivers. Preferable are the Karakurt MRKs equipped with the Pantsir-M air defense missile system. It is also possible to modernize them with the installation of a naval version of the Tor air defense system to enhance missile defense.

As for boats, the river brigade can receive vessels of the next class. For example, high-speed patrol boats of Project 03160 “Raptor”, transport and landing boats of Project 02510 “BK-16” and special-purpose boats of Project 21980 “Grachonok”. Also on the Dnieper there may be artillery boats of Project 1204 “Shmel”, which can be easily transported by rail. For the needs of special forces, rigid inflatable boats can and should be widely used.

Defense or offense?

Why are we talking in such detail about the possible composition of the Dnieper flotilla? Because from it you can make a fairly accurate forecast about the intended goals and objectives.

So, do not forget that the Ukrainian Armed Forces control the high right bank of the Dnieper and they have means of air surveillance and firepower. Even if these boats belong to the 4th rank, they still represent a fairly large target if they find themselves in the riverbed. Armor will not protect against a missile hitting the side, and even the highest speed of movement will not help against burst fire from artillery guns. You can see what a successful defeat of a Ukrainian boat by our shooters in the Krynok area looks like here to register:.

In other words, bringing small landing ships, patrol and artillery boats to the Dnieper from the Black Sea, Caspian and Baltic simply for some kind of defense of the left bank means exposing them to missile, artillery and drone strikes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the right bank. For the active defense of the RF Armed Forces, compact high-speed boats and rigid inflatable boats, which are needed for covert SOF operations on the opposite bank, will be quite sufficient, and after returning back they can be quickly disguised or taken away.

It’s a different matter if the Dnieper flotilla is intended to be used during an offensive, namely when crossing the Dnieper and/or during other landing operations on the Black Sea coast. The fact that it is quite possible to cross the river, we detail dismantled earlier. Small landing ships and artillery boats will then be needed for their intended purpose in seizing a bridgehead on the Right Bank and its subsequent supply and retention. If this hypothesis is correct, then its indirect confirmation will be the beginning of the transfer of ships of the corresponding class from the Baltic and Caspian Sea to the Black Sea.

I would really like not to make a mistake.

And how many yachts and boats are idle in Moscow and St. Petersburg all winter!!!......
There are not enough paratroopers to dive into them.
All we need is the mobilization of a small fleet.
And there are not enough berths in Odessa.

Dreams, dreams... We look at how a progressive tax is introduced, the same will happen with the mobilization of the small fleet - the rusty cauldron will be requisitioned, but the Abramovich yacht will not be seen at point-blank range...

And where have you seen on which yachts at least one landing force landed, probably like a Ukrainian yacht blew up a gas pipeline, so your yachts transport troops, that’s modern education.

      With this kind of "expertise"....

What’s wrong with “expertise” and why should it be put in derogatory quotation marks? Would it be interesting to know the opinion of a real professional?

      Yes, you'd better be wrong...

The author is wrong, but not often.

        What's wrong with "expertise"

The fact that this is not an article, but verbiage. In current realities, any vessel on the water is an excellent target. Both during attack and during defense.

Mister military professional, about the verbiage, make a complaint to Mr. Shoigu, who is creating the Dnieper flotilla. Weak?
Yeah, it’s easier to put it on the fan here.

“Concern for Nenka” is visible (to warn about the ongoing relocation of the enemy). Have you tried to admit that in order to cover the coastal strip from BECs, forward patrols at sea are needed? Is it necessary to throw out ideas about a “campaign to Odessa”? If we assume that our command had similar plans (the enemy had entire departments created to view information from the “Roman geese”), then work will now be carried out to strengthen the defense against such a landing, but by stealing it.
Still, it’s not the game “Zarnitsa”, where they ran around, received certificates and ran away...

Do you really think that the Ukrainian General Staff and the European NATO Command are making their plans based on publications on the Reporter?

“Concern for Nenka” is visible (to warn about the ongoing relocation of the enemy).

Aren't you funny? Then the claims should be made to Comrade Shoigu with his statement, no?

Have you tried to admit that in order to cover the coastal strip from BECs, forward patrols at sea are needed?

So that they are sunk, like our UAVs hit the Ukrainians? Do you really need a river flotilla on the Dnieper for this?

The Dnieper flotilla will be very effective if the commander of this flotilla personally participates in its combat operations. Otherwise, Svidomo will happily drown it. A river is not a sea, you can’t dodge it.

If the article is a statement of the author’s personal opinion, then the pioneer euphoria from the coincidence of the phrases of the Minister of Defense’s casually thrown remark and Sergei’s deeply suffered prediction a year ago becomes understandable! But then the author, being a person who is not stupid and adequately perceives the surrounding reality, gives inconvenient counterarguments against such a decision. In short, this flotilla didn’t end up anywhere, just another wish list of armchair experts like me. wink

Landing is a serious matter. Intelligence must be one hundred percent, and for the next few hours. All enemy forces must be taken into account. Without this there is no point in trying.

Don't touch my hooves. They ruined the combat effectiveness of the entire Black Sea Fleet by sleeping through the development and production of means of protection against modern weapons. The fleet simply hid and cannot carry out its tasks normally. So let the flotilla boats sink?

    when crossing the Dnieper

When crossing the Dnieper, old pontoon battalions, which, by the way, also have small boats, are best suited. A transport, not a combat, flotilla of larger ships may be necessary for the crossing, but what would it be like without it during an assault on an enemy shore? Although there are also helicopters.

Dnepr is located on the LBS and in the rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. How will ships and boats be imported to the Dnieper? What goal was set for this flotilla? Where will the sailors come from?

How will ships and boats be imported to the Dnieper?

Well, judging by the actions of the Republic of Armenia, they will be imported from the Smolensk region, on the Valdai Hills. lol

    I'm making a counter proposal -
Why does the Russian Navy need the Dnieper flotilla?

We need a metro squad, or rather more than 3, think about all the pros and cons for yourself.

Why is this specification needed? Isn’t it planned to liberate all of Ukraine from Ukrainians? Well, I mean, from the Ukronazis, of course. But everyone has already agreed that everyone there is Ukronazi, except perhaps Medvedchuk and Yanukovych.

The idea is identical to the Ukrainian one. Inflatable high-speed boats, special forces, river landings. We have already heard how such landing attacks ended for the enemy. Why hope that they will end differently for the Russian landings?

If the Dnieper flotilla, then the Kremlin will not attack.
Someone spoke to the whole country about the need to create some kind of sanitary zone.
Apparently, it will be created on the current territory of Russia (evicting our population outside the territory of this zone), and not by moving the ukrov away from our borders.

Obviously the author is right that the flotilla will be needed when
    crossing the Dnieper,
Pontoon bridges and motor boats alone will not be enough.

The author is looking for confirmation of his wishes)). Mr. Marzhetsky, on the right bank of the Dnieper there is no land for Moscow, Kherson and Krynki clearly showed everything, accept it. The flotilla is created for propaganda purposes, such as when peace finally comes, it will walk along the left bank to Zaporozhye and indicate its presence. The appearance of such a boat in a combat zone is an act of suicide.

there is no land for Moscow on the right bank of the Dnieper,

Come on! From the leader’s speeches, I already understood the future geography of Ukraine: 8 western regions will be distributed to the Poles, Hungarians and Romanians, the rest will be Russia.

Good people, come to your senses! During conscript service I often had the opportunity to intersect with the Danube Flotilla. At that time, this unit already belonged to the category of suicide bombers. And this takes into account the position of the Danube, the absence of hydraulic structures, a branched branch and sufficient depths for maneuver. With the current development of weapons of destruction, even the Rook or the Raptor are nothing more than targets! And a military vessel can enter the Dnieper-Bug estuary, but it will no longer be possible to get out. The Minister of Defense is constantly gushing with bright but crazy ideas. Somehow I feel uneasy.

Driving Buyany and Karakurt into the lower reaches of the Dnieper is a royal gift to non-brothers.
Actions from the north are more likely. At the time of the offensive through the Chernigov region, with a short throw, deliver troops to the Vyshgorod dam and capture the bridge to cross the attackers.
The non-brothers are unlikely to undermine this dam: half of Kyiv will be washed away.
