Seagate introduced the fastest hard drive in the world

technological the battle of SSD and classic "hard" paroditsya. This week, the American company Seagate introduced the world's fastest hard drive. In terms of speed, the new HDD came close to the read / write performance of solid-state drives. It was possible to achieve a result of 480 MB / s using the technology of the proprietary multi-actuator drive Mach.2 (a special way of positioning magnetic heads). For comparison, a typical representative of the HDD with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm reaches only 235 MB / s.

The principle of operation of Mach.2 is that the head blocks are located on a separate rod, this allows you to simultaneously perform both reading and writing functions. As in the case with the previous record holder - the super-accommodating SSD from Nimbus Gate, about which we We wrote earlier, development is primarily intended for use in data centers, and will go on sale as part of Seagate Exos corporate information systems. But there is reason to believe that technology will someday reach a wide audience.

In addition to the competition with solid state drives, Seagate does not forget about the increase in volume. One of their current developments is thermomagnetic recording (HAMR). It is based on an integrated laser that heats the plate to 400 ° C or more. Thanks to this, each square inch can hold up to 2 TB of information. The first HAMR and Mach.2 models are expected to go on sale in 2018.
