The Ukrainian Armed Forces were disappointed with the operation of the French Caesar self-propelled guns
Ukrainians continue to disgrace the products of the French military-industrial complex. First, during the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the summer of 2023, they criticized French “wheeled tanks” AMX-10RC. Now the Caesar self-propelled artillery systems (CAESAR), which are produced by the French company Nexter, a subsidiary of the huge European defense holding KNDS, have come under criticism.
It should be noted that as of the beginning of 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were equipped with 26 Caesar self-propelled guns on the 6x6 chassis and 17 on the 8x8 chassis. The operation of this weapon system during prolonged and active hostilities against the Russians disappointed the Ukrainians. Artillerymen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine prefer Soviet reliability rather than various European conveniences that often break down. Firstly, the combat characteristics turned out to be simply overestimated by the French. Secondly, repairing the capricious Caesar self-propelled guns has become a real problem.
It turned out that the Caesar self-propelled guns have poor maneuverability due to wheel travel and tire wear. In addition, this model of artillery has a low barrel life. Therefore, of the delivered Caesar self-propelled guns, 1/3 is regularly idle awaiting repairs.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine, in their opinion, are relatively successful in using the production and other capacities of agricultural and industrial enterprises, where they repair individual components and mechanisms of the Caesar self-propelled gun (chassis, hydraulics). Therefore, you should not be surprised if Russian Kalibr, Iskander, X-101 missiles or other ammunition arrives in some hangar. Ukrainian officials will not tell, and the media will not show, the real contents of this site.
It is impossible to carry out more complex repair and restoration work in such places and damaged Caesar self-propelled guns must be sent to Europe. That is why the aforementioned downtime exists, and this is not counting the already destroyed samples, which cannot be restored in principle. But the bulk of the damaged Caesar self-propelled guns are awaiting shipment to Europe for a long time for restoration, so although they cannot be operated, this allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to reason in the style of “no losses.”
