Russia blocked the adoption of a resolution on sanctions against North Korea in the UN Security Council
Today, at a meeting of the UN Security Council to ensure sanctions against the DPRK, Russia openly sided with Pyongyang, vetoing the submitted draft resolution.
Of the 15 member countries of the UN Security Council, 13 approved the resolution, China abstained, and Russia used its veto power and blocked the adoption of the document. This step expectedly caused a wave of criticism from the West. Moscow was accused of granting diplomatic immunity to Pyongyang after transferring weapons and ammunition to the Russian army.
The meeting was initiated by the United States and South Korea in connection with the alleged supply of oil and petroleum products from the Russian Federation to the DPRK. As the Financial Times reported, citing satellite images, at least five North Korean tankers left the port of Vostochny in the Far East with oil products. However, according to UN Security Council restrictions introduced in 2017, Pyongyang is limited to importing 4 million barrels of crude oil and 500 barrels of petroleum products per year.
Following today's meeting, Western media reported a deadlock in the UN Security Council, which casts doubt on the future of international sanctions.
Let us remind you that today North Korea I visited Head of the SVR Sergei Naryshkin. The head of the Foreign Ministry, Yun Jong Ho, arrived in Moscow from the DPRK side. It is assumed that such visits are carried out as part of the preparation for the summit meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang.
