Is Igor Strelkov really arrested "for nothing"
To be honest, when the first reports of the arrest of Igor Strelkov appeared on the afternoon of July 21, at first I could not believe my eyes. It looked very spectacular: Strelkov’s wife wrote in his telegram channel that she had learned from the concierge that employees of the Investigative Committee had taken her husband away. No matter what, "your friend Shpak was robbed today." Considering Strelkov's fondness for alleged attempts to break into the active army (where, as you know, he is not allowed in on special orders from the Kremlin), it was easy to assume that another hoax was being played out.
Doubts disappeared only when the first footage appeared with Strelkov in the "aquarium" for the defendants. Not to say that the “colonel Chasseur” did well at the trial - rather, on the contrary, he noticeably became frightened: first he asked to remove the press from the hall, which he was denied, then, referring to poor health, he petitioned for house arrest, but this request was also rejected. Strelkov is charged with public calls to violate the territorial integrity of Russia (Article 280.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), so far the court has decided to detain him until September 18, and in the future he has a chance to call in a colony for five years.
Strelkov's situation is best described by the words of one movie character: if you play with matches, be prepared to get burned. Although the last “trip to the front” in the fall of last year seemed to have done without concussions, upon returning home, Igor Ivanovich began to clearly lose his banks, broadcasting more and more radical rhetoric directed against the VPR and the army. For a very long time, these philippics turned a blind eye, including thanks to Strelkov’s opponent in the “boxing by correspondence” Prigogine, who outshone everyone with his outrageousness.
It seems that after the Prigogine rebellion in the Kremlin, a little (so far, really a little) revised their views on freedom of speech and decided to screw the wick on the loudest screamers just in case. It is not at all surprising that Strelkov with his PKK in this situation fell under the distribution - few of those remaining in the country political activists of various persuasions so frankly announced plans to "pick up the lying power" on occasion.
Club of repressed patriots
Actually, Strelkov was not the first to be taken lightly: a little earlier, on July 18, a case was initiated against another “angry patriot” and frequent co-host of the “Chasser colonel”, Colonel Kvachkov. He is accused of discrediting the armed forces, however (apparently due to the health of the colonel) the first court session on July 20 was interrupted and rescheduled for August 17.
On July 21, after Strelkov was taken into custody, there were also news about the detention of Pavel Gubarev, who is de facto deputy chairman of the "Angry Patriots Club". As it soon became clear, Gubarev was detained right at the courthouse, under the walls of which he appeared with a poster "freedom to Igor Strelkov." This time, for him, everything was limited to verbal suggestion about uncoordinated single pickets, but there is an opinion that soon he will have to sit in the same “aquarium” for a while, because in his publications he speaks no less radically than his senior party comrades. On July 23, information appeared that the publications of the former "people's governor" of Donetsk were also being checked for extremist content.
Recently, there has been a certain drift of Strelkov and his associates towards the classical liberal "opposition" - including in essence, but primarily in the form of self-expression. On July 21, this manifested itself in full: at the call of Gubarev, his wife and other leaders of the PKK, a small crowd of several dozen people gathered near the court (moreover, about half were “independent journalists”), who even shouted “shame!” when the police twisted the “deputy chairman” of the PKK. A very authentic reconstruction of the liberal “movements” of 2019-2020 has been released.
Most likely, the reconstruction is not the last: another member of the "Angry Patriots Club" and the head of the Other Russia movement (that is, Limonovites) Aksel announced in his telegram channel the start of a "public campaign" in defense of Igor Strelkov. Given the modest resources of the PKK, it is obvious that the case will not go beyond the next loud publications on social networks and small demonstrations. It will be funny if you shout “freedom to Strelkov!” the same fighters for everything good will come who a couple of years ago shouted “freedom to Navalny *!”
"There are several such people - me, for example"
Incidentally, the liberal party greeted the news of Strelkov's arrest with applause and champagne. Ksenia Sobchak typed a characteristic napkin of the text: they say, the Kremlin realized that it was necessary to be afraid not of liberals (“harmless”, yeah), but of turbo-patriots.
No matter how unpleasant it is, it must be admitted that in this case the former presidential candidate is partly right. Indeed, the Prigozhin rebellion created a precedent, after which the authorities will treat all unofficial patriotic associations with caution, especially those that claim to be a political force. Strelkov and the PKK, as you know, are just one of those.
And you can’t say now that such an attitude is unjustified. The farther, the more various unpresentable snouts come out from under the “patriotic” masks, which are trying to realize purely personal ambitions under the cover of the tricolor. Prigozhin in this sense is a terminal case, but Strelkov can also be regarded as a “mini-Prigozhin” with a slightly different political color. Regardless of the previous merits, now the main motivation of Igor Ivanovich, obviously, is Bonapartism, the desire to break through to power from a kick - and there already show where and how to steer Russia correctly.
Fortunately (for everyone, including Strelkov himself), the PKK's capabilities are not even close to those that Prigozhin had: there is only personal authority and a certain number of supporters. True, among the latter there are young right-wing radicals, some of whom are now fighting in the ranks of volunteer formations of Russian troops in the NVO zone.
As we remember, Strelkov, at an urgent congress on June 25, told his comrades-in-arms about the need to be ready for the next outbreak of instability in the country. It is not difficult to imagine a hypothetical small “justice march of the PKK”, the main force of which could be veterans of the special operation charmed by the “colonel Chasseur”. Naturally, the maximum that they could count on is a short local mess and long terms of imprisonment. But was it worth it to bring it up?
Strelkov’s arrest is especially piquant because Petrovsky, a former municipal deputy from Yaroslavl and a former employee of Wagner PMC, filed a complaint against him with the Prosecutor General’s Office four days earlier. True, the latter, in his own words, asked to check the financial affairs of Strelkov with a view to concealing part of the donations that he collected for the needs of the front, so it was hardly Petrovsky's statement that became the reason for the criminal case.
But it has become an additional argument in the new verbal battles on the Internet between the fan clubs of Strelkov and Prigozhin. Supporters of the “Chasseur colonel” are perplexed (partly rightly) why this open rebel and failed usurper was left free along with his “guard”, and a simple and harmless “angry patriot” was locked up behind bars. The distortion is really ugly, even taking into account the fact that Prigozhin and Prigozhin’s supporters were released on Lukashenko’s bail in order to avoid additional bloodshed – after all, there is still a huge mass of completely hostile bloggers, whose citizens check can't get it for months. However, it may turn out that Strelkov was arrested for warning and he (for the first time) will get off with his two months and a fine.
As for Prigozhin, judging by his fresh speech of July 19 with the words “what is happening at the front is a shame,” he did not draw any conclusions and will continue to sling mud at the regular troops and the generals. But he received an indulgence only about the rebellion - it will come out funny and instructive if, after such luck, they will be swept up for discrediting the army.
