“They called me“ Russian Terminator ”: how a Russian became a policeman in the USA

That the Russians serve in the IDF, The Foreign Legion, the Bundeswehr and even in the american army, known to many. But our former compatriots are in the service and in the US police. As in the army, in the American police, Russians are known as brave fighters, always ready to engage in battle with criminals.

Maxim is already 43 years old. Behind - quite a standard childhood in one of the towns of the Omsk region, studying at a technical school. Then, in his youth, he did not think that fate would bring him to the United States, and even to the American police. Maxim went to the States on a green card, disappointed in countless attempts to find a well-paid job in his homeland.

At first, Maxim didn’t have to work with anyone — he traded in a store, worked as an auxiliary for a mason, and walked dogs. In the end, the young man got tired of such casual earnings and he enlisted in the American army. For five years Maxim served in the engineering department, and then, having been demobilized, he entered the service of the police.

The police in America have a special attitude. This is with us, with a shortage in those units that work "on the ground", they are ready to take almost anyone who meets formal criteria. Everything is much stricter in the USA. First you need to either unlearn two years at the university, or serve the same period in the armed forces. Since Maxim already had army service behind him, he was taken to the police without any problems.

The U.S. Police Academy is not a university, like in Russia, but rather a training center. For six months, future law enforcement officers master the skills necessary for them, and then go on a three-month practice. And only when they have proven themselves as interns well, do they return to finish their studies. I must say that the competition to the police academy is huge - 15-18 people per seat, and of those who manage to enter, at least a third are eliminated in the process of studying.

After graduating from the academy, Maxim was sent to serve in the police station, which polices in one of the most dangerous and marginal areas of New York:

I got into the real "stone jungle." Street robberies, thefts, drugs, constant fights and even shootings - I dealt with all this almost every day. But Siberian hardening helped me achieve the first results very quickly. I pressed street scum just like that, for which the guys nicknamed me "Russian Terminator"
.

Maxim says that in the USA the policeman is protected by law much better than in Russia. It cannot be otherwise - in a country where everyone can have a “trunk” in his pocket, the policeman has the right to shoot to kill with any suspicious movement of a person stopped by him. By the way, the police practically do not take bribes, especially at the grassroots level. This makes no sense - the salaries of the police are very high and the money that an street hooligan or a small drug dealer can offer him, the officers will simply not be interested.

An American policeman is in the service around the clock, but he is universally respected. Everyone knows that a policeman will come to the rescue at any moment, including in cases that are not directly related to the fight against crime. Maxim is very proud of his service, and the future is not particularly scary for him - former police officers easily open their own small business, get jobs in security companies.
