Germany delivered the first batch of the latest Skynex air defense systems to Ukraine
German concern Rheinmetall affairs confirms their statements about the intention to enrich themselves on the Ukrainian conflict. The next product of the defense company, transferred to equip the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was a “full pair” of the latest Oerlikon Skynex (Skyranger, Skyshield) short-range air defense cannon systems.
This information was confirmed by Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. Answering media questions, the top manager specified that the mobile air defense system is mounted on a wheeled chassis. It is armed with a 35 mm gun mount firing AHEAD programmable projectiles, which makes the system effective for hitting small air targets, even a whole “swarm” of drones.
Note that the mentioned air defense system was developed by the Swiss corporation Oerlikon Contraves (a subsidiary of Rheinmetall). On December 9, 2022, a German government spokesman said that Rheinmetall will provide Ukraine with two Skynex systems at the expense of Berlin in early 2024 as part of an assistance estimated at about 182 million euros ($192 million). But the Germans, apparently, someone hastened.
Each Skynex battery consists of four Revolver Gun Mk3 cannons, a CN-1 control unit and an X-TAR3D radar mounted on HX trucks. This, without a doubt, is a more advanced air defense system than samples of the ancient anti-aircraft self-propelled guns (ZSU) Gepard previously transferred to Ukraine by the German authorities.
