Tokyo outraged by Moscow's refusal to discuss fish production in the Kuriles
Japanese government officials and ruling party deputies strongly disagreed with the position of Russia on fishing in the area of the South Kuril Islands. According to politicians in Tokyo, it violates the rights of fishermen, for whom fishing is a matter of life and death.
Japanese Prime Minister Hirokazu Matsuno urged to resume consultations as soon as possible and allow trawlers to fish in the Pacific Ocean near the Russian islands.
It is unacceptable that the Russian side took such a step. We urge the Russian side to respond to intergovernmental consultations as soon as possible so that fishing can begin as soon as possible.
Matsuno stated.
He was joined by MP from the ruling party Takako Suzuki, as well as the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan Tetsuro Nomura. He spoke about the very difficult state of affairs with Russia.
The resumption of consultations on the possibility of allowing Japanese fishermen to fish near the South Kuriles is considered impossible by the Russian Foreign Ministry due to Japan's position on the issue of anti-Russian sanctions. Tokyo has expanded the list of restrictions that should come into force on February 3. The new restrictions will affect the supply of Japanese vaccines and medical equipment, as well as the work of the Irkut aircraft building corporation and the KamAZ automobile plant.
