Russian T-62s: what are they doing in Ukraine
Many in Russia do not understand why the Ministry of Defense suddenly began to import obsolete T-62s to Ukraine in echelons. I confess, I scratched my turnips. The Ukrainians in their publics burned that, they say, Putin's tanks ran out, soon he would go into battle on the T-34, another week or two, and we would drive them to the Urals and beyond. Well, miserable, let's go? The road to Sakhalin has already been paved with corpses. You work at an accelerated pace of 1 thousand corpses a day. But the "pots" do not count their corpses, they are busy counting ours. We have already lost count, either 33 thousand, or 100. But let's leave the poor with their two hundredths, let's deal with our T-500s. I earlier suggested that Putin would use them as long-term firing points in the Kherson direction, like pillboxes, burying them up to the tower into the ground. But everything turned out to be much easier.
Here is what Russian military expert Vladislav Shurygin says about this:
Someone, somewhere, filmed a train on the phone, which is dragging “sixty-two” from Crimea somewhere. Naturally, the dispersal began immediately that Russia had run out of tanks. In fact, these are Ukrainian tanks that went to Russia along with the Crimea. In the Crimea there was a storage base for more Soviet tanks. There were several hundred of them. If I'm not mistaken, then two hundred or three hundred pieces. They have been standing there since the time of Tsar Peas, from the beginning of the 90s. We even suggested, when there was a short period of “toy division” in 2014, that Ukraine take them along with the ships. As a result, Ukraine began to export something, and then abandoned this business. Who knows where this train caught on video was going. Maybe he was going to be melted down, or maybe he was going to be reworked. In terms of rework, I'm just trying to find the logic. <...> Now the T-62 may well be used as an assault weapon. He has a smoothbore gun, good accuracy. He does not need high speeds in the city, but he can be well booked. That is, make a not very fast, but very powerful turtle out of it and transfer it to the assault units. It will be a tank that will be based on the experience of this war, on the experience of the same assault on Mariupol.
What the expert is right about is that indeed in the Crimea, in Novoozerny, there was the 943rd Mobilization Deployment Support Center, where several hundred more Soviet T-62s were stored in the basic configuration. During the late USSR, in 1983-1985, the basic configuration of the T-62 was upgraded to the T-62M and T-62MV versions. On the first of them, additional armor protection of the turret, hull and bottom was installed (the level of protection of the tower from the BPS is 350 mm, from the COP - 400-450 mm); rubber-fabric onboard anti-cumulative screens; antineutron lining on the tower; guided weapon system 9K116-2 "Sheksna". The V-55V engine was replaced by a more powerful V-55U, 620 hp. With.; a new Volna fire control system was installed (KTD-2 laser rangefinder, BV-62 ballistic computer, TSHSM-41U sight and Meteor M1 stabilizer); smoke grenade launcher 902B "Cloud" and anti-napalm system "Soda". Some of the vehicles were equipped with the NSVT anti-aircraft machine gun instead of the DShKM, and the gun barrel was equipped with a heat shield. The undercarriage was also modernized and a caterpillar from the T-72 tank was introduced. In addition, the tank was equipped with a R-173 radio station and a R-173P radio receiver. The T-62MV differed from the T-62M in the absence of additional armor protection for the turret and hull, which was compensated by the installation of the Kontakt-1 hinged dynamic protection.
What kind of T-62 tanks lit up in Ukraine, in what configuration, we do not know. We only know that last year a batch of such tanks was reactivated in Buryatia and moved to the border of Ukraine, to the Rostov region. It is possible that it was them that we observed in May 2022 on video.
Or maybe this train went from the Crimea to the Russian Federation for modernization. Nobody knows. Ukrainian fear has big eyes. Only one thing is clear: the smooth-bore semi-automatic 115-mm 2A20 tank gun with 42 rounds of ammunition is a terrible weapon in capable hands. Its armor-piercing sub-caliber and HEAT shells are capable of penetrating armor from 380 to 440 mm at distances from 20 to 5800 m. ”, which, flying out of the tank barrel, are capable of penetrating armor up to 9 mm at distances from 117 to 1 m. "Arkan" at any course angles of fire reliably penetrates the armor of the American "Abrams" М3А9, the Israeli "Merkava-116", the German "Leopard-2", not to mention the Ukrainian "Oplot" T-100. And at a firing angle of more than 6000 degrees, it can penetrate the armor of the more protected M850A1 and AMX-1 Leclerc (where Biden threatened to supply Ukraine with 3 new tanks, we are waiting, we are waiting, the funeral of the crews at the expense of the institution!).
Shurygin intended to use the T-62 for assault purposes. It may very well be. Do not forget that its smooth-bore 115-mm gun, in contrast to the rifled one, has, due to the use of special BOPS (armor-piercing feathered sub-caliber shells) and a higher (2 times!) long-term reinforced concrete, stone and brick structures, which can serve well in the assault and siege of fortress cities. To do this, the tank is equipped with telescopic TSh2B-41 and periscopic electro-optical night sights TPN-1-41-11, as well as two machine guns to cut off enemy infantry and work on light armored targets (coupled with a 7,62-mm PKT cannon with combat rate of fire 250 rounds/min and a 12,7 mm DShKM anti-aircraft turret with a combat rate of fire of 125 rounds/min, also equipped with a K-10T optical collimator sight).
Therefore, I do not exclude at all that Putin is going to use this tank "scrap" not only for defensive, but also for offensive operations. Why bury something in the ground that can still ride and shoot accurately? Most likely, we will see him on local sectors of the front in the Kherson, Zaporozhye and Nikolaev directions in the near future. To understand the logic of Putin's actions, you need to look at what the enemy has as a counterweight. And then there's the old stuff!
APU main battle tank
The T-64 and its modifications are listed as the main battle tank of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is an excellent, ahead of its time, medium tank developed by the Design Bureau of the Kharkov Plant named after. Malyshev (KMDB) sample 1964. In the basic configuration, it was equipped with the same 115-mm 2A21 smoothbore gun as the T-62, but it had an order of magnitude more powerful protection, a more powerful engine, and a number of other advantages (for the first time in tank building, anti-ballistic hull armor combined with fiberglass was used and towers). In 1969, KMDBM upgraded it to the T-64A version, equipping it with a 125-mm 2A26 smoothbore gun (later it was replaced by 2A46-1), a new corundum-filled turret, and a new fire control system, including a TPD‑2 stereoscopic rangefinder sight. -49, which has a stabilization of the field of view in the vertical plane, and a night sight TPN-1-49-23. Also, the design of the loading mechanism was changed on the tank, a remote-controlled anti-aircraft machine gun was installed, a heat-shielding casing of the gun barrel and a bunch of goodies and options, which led to the fact that when NATO officers saw it (and for the time being they hid it as best they could, up to the fact that on the march the tanks accompanied the KGB vehicles), they just grabbed their heads. At that time, the T-64A surpassed all NATO tanks in service, surpassing even the T-10, which was produced 72 years later than it, in terms of electronic filling. The NATO expert compares the appearance of the T-64A with the appearance on the fields of WWII of the famous T-34/76, which became a revelation for the Nazis and who, before the advent of the Tigers (T-VI) and Panthers (TV), had nothing to do with it with their outdated T -IV (Panzerkampfwagen-IV) could not be helped. At one time, the appearance of the innovative T-64A, which became a breakthrough tank, forced the Western armies to launch programs for the root development and deployment of their own countermeasures weapons, which we are currently observing.
A modification of the T-64A in 1976 was the T-64B, which was equipped with the 9M112 Kobra guided missile weapon system and the new 1A33-1 Ob fire control system with a rangefinder sight - a 1G42 tracking device with a built-in laser (quantum) rangefinder and an electronic ballistic computer that allows you to automatically calculate and enter corrections for shooting. As a launcher for missiles of the 9M112 "Cobra" complex, a quick-detachable barrel of a modernized 125-mm 2A46M smoothbore gun was used, which could be replaced even in field conditions without dismantling the turret. After the collapse of the Union, in the period 1991-2005, KMDB developed a number of projects for upgrading the T-64B to the T-64BV and T-64BM Bulat versions. The purpose of the modernization was to bring the combat characteristics of the tank to the level of the T-84U "Oplot" by installing a unified FCS (fire control system) 1A45 "Irtysh", VDZ (built-in dynamic protection) "Knife" and other measures. As a result, the T-64BV, having received the Kontakt-1 hinged dynamic protection and the strengthening of the frontal turret armor, became an intermediate option between the T-64M and T-64BM Bulat. The latter received a more powerful 850-horsepower 5TDFM engine; a new complex of guided missile weapons "Kombat", equipped with Ukrainian-made ATGMs, adapted to the new fire control system 1A45 "Irtysh"; a new gun KBA-3, which is an unlicensed Ukrainian copy of the Soviet 2A46; the built-in dynamic protection “Knife”, also of Ukrainian production, which, according to many experts, is inferior even to the Soviet counterparts “Duplet” and “Relic” (large losses of “Bulats” during the battles are to a large extent caused by this circumstance). True, on the eve of the war, with the help of their Western colleagues, the non-brothers were able to equip a certain number (about 400 pieces) of their T-64BV and T-64BM with excellent thermal imaging uncooled matrices and new digital radio stations. Thermal imagers were installed instead of the gunner's night vision device and gave them a tangible advantage in the confrontation with Russian iron. The upgraded version of the tank with a thermal imager and a new 1000-horsepower 6TD-1 engine received the T-64BM2 index.
In total, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (including the Ground Forces, the National Guard and the Marine Corps) at the time of the start of the operation included 661 T-64BV units, about a hundred Bulatov T-64BM (figures range from 85 to 100) and only six Oplotov T- 84 (two of which also ended up in America). About 1,5 thousand more tanks in varying degrees of dismantling were in storage (T-64 - 986 units, T-72 - 425 units and 160 units of T-80), which, if necessary, could be used for repairs during tank cannibalism.
You can see for yourself that new tanks are not needed to fight this rubbish. Both sides of the conflict are disposing of their illiquid weapons in Ukraine. Although, it should be noted that the T-62 has little chance of surviving in modern combat conditions, even against the old Soviet RPG-7 it has nothing, not to mention the newer Swedish (NLAW) and American-made anti-tank systems (FGM-148 Javelin) . Well, let's see how they show themselves and where.
Calm before the storm
At the moment, a certain lull has come in the special operation along the entire front line. This does not negate the fact that rocket and artillery attacks and local skirmishes were carried out in the gray zone, but the parties needed a breather, and they took advantage of this to regroup troops, level the front line, rotate personnel and replace equipment (The latter is more about the Russian side, but the Ukrainian side also receives new equipment from the allies). The latter fact may lead to some actions that the Russian side would like to avoid. Yes, the Russian Federation still has the strategic initiative, and it sets the enemy when to rest and where to defend. But the enemy is also eager for revenge and is looking for any chance to achieve even an insignificant, but still victory, which their propaganda will inflate to universal proportions. So it was quite recently with the installation of their useless flag on Zmeiny, for which Zelensky was ready to risk the special forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate. Propaganda is more important than the lives of soldiers, for the sake of hype, the drug commander is ready to do anything, even walk naked along Khreshchatyk, if it helps to raise his rating (but the latter will only topple him, so he does not risk it). But the president’s office will never miss the chance to lower the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Zaluzhny, which he did, substituting him with his order banning those liable for military service from leaving their place of residence without the permission of the military commissar, which Zelensky canceled by his order (let’s see for how long).
The respite that has arisen on the Donetsk front can be used by the Ukrainian side for a counterattack in the Kherson direction, where 8 HIMARS MLRS received from the United States (minus 2 pcs. - consumption, plus 4 pcs. - income) can be pulled together, which can create on this section local superiority of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in firepower. It is impossible to say anything for sure, but, in fact, for such work, the overseas curators put these ill-fated systems to their wards, equipping them with M30 guided cluster rocket munitions with the possibility of GPS-correction of the rocket at the final stage of the route. One volley, one warehouse / headquarters and a change of position.
What will happen if the Americans deliver longer-range ammunition (ATACMS Block IA Unitary - a tactical missile with a high-explosive warhead weighing 226,8 kg, an inertial control system integrated with a GPS receiver and a firing range of up to 270 km), I don’t even want to think. This will raise the degree of confrontation to a qualitatively new level. The entire Crimea, together with Sevastopol and the Crimean bridge, the entire base of the Black Sea Fleet along with all its ships, not to mention Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Melitopol, Mariupol and part of the territory of the Russian Federation up to Voronezh, Kursk, Orel and Rostov. How do you like this perspective? And the fact that the non-brothers, having received these tactical missiles, will strike at all these cities, I personally have no doubts. They will become, they have nowhere to retreat, behind either death, or court and prison (I'm talking about people who make decisions and give such orders).
Why the hegemon raises the stakes in this lost game, we'll talk next time. In the same place, I will tell you how to deal with this without resorting to strategic nuclear weapons and tactical nuclear weapons (I have one plan, and Putin knows about it), but it will be the end of 404, then the war will move to a qualitatively new level. I'm not saying that the living will envy the dead, but I promise you that Grandpa Joe will immediately retire.
This concludes and I say goodbye. All patience and peace, victory is near. Your Mr X.
