The new Russian high-power turbine failed

The confrontation imposed by Western countries revealed a whole range of problems of the Russian economics: its predominantly resource-based nature, export orientation and the rapid disappearance of its own manufacturing industry. The strategy of the United States and its allies is to block access to their markets for Russian metallurgy products, as well as reduce dependence on supplies of "blue fuel" from the Russian Federation.





However, there is no silver lining. Russian business will be forced to reorient as a result of the supply of its products to the domestic market. Reduced access to the European gas market will force Gazprom to actively develop energy projects in Russia. Together, this can give impetus to the development of its own Russian industry.

Currently, certain steps are being taken to import substitution of Western products. The need to ensure the energy independence of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine revealed a dependence on the supply of gas turbines manufactured by German Siemens and American General Electric. The German company banned the use of its turbines in the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, but the Russian side in this case managed to circumvent these restrictions. However, the second time this number will not work.

Today, the gas turbine market in Russia is practically absent, but the demand for them will grow rapidly due to the planned program of large-scale modernization of thermal power plants by 40 Gigawatts. Russia should become the largest consumer of this high-tech products. Until 2030, demand for high-power gas turbines may be 80 units.

Russian industry could not help but respond to this request. UEC-Saturn together with Inter RAO began a deep modernization of the GTD-110 gas turbine engine. The head of the Ministry of Energy of Russia Alexander Novak said:

Our task is to create our own large gas turbine unit and replace imported units with it


The project of the domestic turbine was named GTD-110M, its capacity is planned at the level of 110-120 Megawatts. The development is financed by RosNANO Corporation, its cost is estimated at 1,5 billion rubles.

Unfortunately, the process of import substitution is not going smoothly. It became known that a prototype of a Russian turbine of high power collapsed during the tests. The reason was a defect in the rotor part of the engine. Project participants, commenting on the problem, believe that it is not fatal, the restoration of the machine may take about a year, or another turbine may be sent for testing.

During lengthy tests, where GTD-110M resource indicators were checked, a number of mechanisms really failed. As a result, the tests had to be stopped until the problems were fixed. This is the first experience in creating turbines of this class in Russia, and the difficulties during the tests were quite expected

- said a representative of the state corporation.

A representative of Rostec claims that the project may require additional investments, which may be attracted in the form of a public-private partnership. Interest in the project was shown by Power Machines by Alexei Mordashov, who have unloaded capacities at their joint ventures with Siemens. Experts are inclined to believe that the participation of Alexei Mordashov’s company can strengthen a promising Russian project.
