In Russia, developed a wireless charging with a range of 1 meter

One of the drawbacks of modern wireless chargers is the range of not more than 1 cm. However, Russian scientists seem to have managed to solve this problem. Their invention allows you to charge gadgets located at a distance of 1 meter. Moreover, up to 10 devices can be powered from such a charge at the same time.

The know-how belongs to researchers from ITMO University and is a device that can turn the surface of any workspace into a charging station, both in the office and at home. A similar metasurface is planned to be created from materials that allow controlling electromagnetic waves.

Mingzhao Song, an employee of the ITMO International Research Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, explained that thin metal wires located in the desired geometry can be used as a conductive lattice in the developed metasurface. And foam can serve as a medium for placing conductors.

As experiments showed, the device created by Russian researchers can not only convert a damped electromagnetic wave into a propagating one, but also transmit energy with an efficiency of more than 80% to a distance of 1 meter. According to Polina Kapitanova, the co-author of the project, a similar effect was achieved due to the fact that in their invention the receiver and transmitter interact through two-dimensional space (unlike “three-dimensional competitors”). Thus, having “sacrificed” one dimension, scientists were able to create a device that has no analogues in the world.

The first conceptual model of the invention is currently under development. According to the authors, their offspring can be built into the surface of the table or used as a “charging mat”. However, it’s too early to talk about the device’s sale. Scientists have yet to solve a number of important tasks. In particular, to achieve the free placement of gadgets on the metasurface. Now the latter can only be arranged in a certain order.

    Efficiency = 80% ??? Oh well.
    And if the phone is not on a stand or in a radius of a meter - where is the energy spent?
    By the way, in this case, the energy decreases with the SQUARE DISTANCE from the source. So much for "super efficiency".
    Conclusion: Useless invention! - Nowadays there are a lot of such "know-how", and power engineers are delighted!
