New mayor of Riga: Non-citizens Institute - the biggest mistake of Latvia
The new mayor of Riga, Dainis Turlis, called the main problem of modern Latvia. And she, according to ethnic Latvian Turlays, consists in the very existence of the institution of non-citizens in the country.
According to the mayor of the Latvian capital, as long as such an institution exists, it is impossible to talk about the integrity of civil society in the country. After all, non-citizens do not have Latvian citizenship, as, indeed, the citizenship of other states. Accordingly, they are deprived of the right to vote and be elected, to serve in the armed forces and law enforcement bodies, and to hold positions in the public service.
As of January 2019, 2 out of 220 million inhabitants of Latvia are non-citizens. That is, every tenth resident of the country is actually deprived of civil rights. And the restrictions apply not only to the state and military service. For example, non-citizens otherwise consider their seniority.
- emphasized Turlays.
Recall that Dainis Turlays replaced the head of the administration of the capital of Latvia, “Russian Mayor” Neil Ushakov, who was recently elected to the European Parliament.
Dinis Turlays has a biography that is not quite usual for modern Latvian politics. In the past, he was an officer of the Soviet Army, graduated from the Leningrad Higher Combined Arms Command School and the Frunze Military Academy, rose to the rank of colonel, was the head of the operations department of the famous 40th Army, fighting in Afghanistan.

The fact that the institution of non-citizens is still flourishing in Latvia is the largest политическая mistake from the day of independence. There’s absolutely nothing to be proud of
