"Naftogaz" admitted: Ukraine has no money for gas

The head of the Naftogaz Ukrainian corporation, Andrei Kobolev, warned that gas injection into underground storage facilities in Ukraine is under threat. The country simply does not have money to replenish its fuel reserves.

According to Andriy Kobolev, this year Ukraine purchased 20% more gas than in 2018. If Kiev maintains its previous line for gas purchases, then by the beginning of the heating season it will be able to provide the necessary gas level of 20 billion cubic meters. However, this will require additional provision of the country with credit funds. So far, Kobolev calls the figure of $ 1 billion in loan funds.

Why is it about 2020? The fact is that in 2020, according to Ukrainian leaders, Russia could stop gas transit through the country. In this case, Ukraine will have to rely on its own funds and gas sources.

Currently, Naftogaz Corporation is experiencing significant problems with working capital. Naftogaz is not able to buy gas in volumes sufficient to cover the country's needs. The only way out is to attract credit, but this requires the consent of the country's top leadership.

When Petro Poroshenko was president, Ukraine already gained colossal loans from the IMF, borrowed a lot of money from the United States and the European Union. But everything that was borrowed will sooner or later have to be repaid. The new generation of Ukrainian politicians... There is one more way out - to increase selling prices for gas. But in the context of the rapid impoverishment of Ukrainian citizens, such a decision is fraught with social upheaval.
