Europeans will acquire an unmanned fleet

In our minds, unmanned vehicles gradually cease to be something futuristic, and are becoming more widespread (despite the difficulties), and unmanned aerial vehicles have long surprised no one. However, the Norwegian company Massterply went further, and plans to create an entire shipping company, the fleet of which will consist entirely of unmanned ships.

It all started last year when the Norwegian company Kongsberg (owner of Massterply) introduced the robot ship Yara Birkeland to the public. The companies are now joining forces with Wilhelmsen, another Norwegian shipping company. According to Thomas Wilhelmsen, President of Wilhelmsen, their plans include the use of autonomous vessels first for coastal flights, and only then the company intends to engage in international shipping.

In addition to the unmanned fleet, the Norwegians will have to create an extensive infrastructure of ground control centers that will control the movement of drones, and in addition, allow a person in emergency situations to take control of the ship. All this has to be designed and built in the near future, because the first flights off the coast of Norway are planned in 2020.
