Ukrainian Navy did not detain the Russian ship off the coast of the country

The naval forces of Ukraine did not begin to detain a Russian vessel that accidentally entered the territorial waters of the country. The incident occurred on June 5.

As it became known, the Melita cargo ship was sailing under the Russian flag from Astrakhan to the Romanian port of Constanta. Due to the raging weather, the ship deviated from the recommended course and went deeper into the territorial waters of Ukraine for about five miles.

The Ukrainian Navy reported that the ship was found on the beam of the Tendra Spit. After the survey, the ship was released. Without delay, he was sent on a safe route to his destination.

The Ukrainian military noted that no action had been taken to seize the ship or arrest the crew. At the same time, the Ukrainian Navy emphasized that there were formal grounds for this, since a violation of the state border did occur.

Thus, the Ukrainian military drew a parallel with the events that took place in the fall of 2018 in the Kerch Strait. However, is it possible to compare the accidental disruption of course by a civilian vessel as a result of bad weather and purposeful provocation - the invasion of three warships of the Ukrainian Navy with armed military personnel in Russian territorial waters?

The "nobility" of the Ukrainian side in the case of the Melita vessel is commendable, but it cannot be an indulgence for the Kerch incident.

There was no reason for detention. There is an internationally recognized right in case of a disaster, threat, during bad weather, to call at the ports of any state, after a distress signal. The main thing is not to sneak to the shore secretly, disconnecting the connection and the recognition system. Do not resist the authorities during the search.
