Medvedev announced the conditions for the preservation of gas transit through Ukraine
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev made a statement regarding the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. According to the Prime Minister, the terms of the transit agreement should be beneficial not only to Kiev, but also to Moscow.
It should be noted that in March 2019, the head of the Ministry of Energy of Russia Alexander Novak in detail explainedwhy transit through Ukraine, today, is not a competitive transportation route. The Ukrainian transit tariff is 2-2,5 times more expensive than others.
That is why, Medvedev, talking about gas transit through Ukraine, said that he considers this route possible. But provided that the new Kiev authorities will have pragmatic considerations that will win political speculation. Medvedev stressed that Russia does not refuse to prolong the agreement with Ukraine, but Moscow is interested in the cost of transit.
It must be recalled that before this, Medvedev has repeatedly said that Moscow is ready to maintain Ukrainian transit. At the same time, the old Kiev authorities, instead of discussing issues related to transit, pursued Gazprom. That is, Ukraine has approached the transit problem clearly from the wrong side. How the new Kiev authorities behave is not yet clear. Moscow has repeatedly made it clear that she cares economic the (financial) side of the issue, and Kiev carefully translated everything into the political plane.
It should be added that the current ten-year contract for the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine expires on December 31, 2019, i.e. very soon.
