Pompeo: Europe should refuse to cooperate with Russia in the energy sector

The United States hopes that European countries will cease building their energy base tied to Russia. This was stated by United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during the international economic summit in The Hague.



The head of the US State Department said that Europe needs a diversified and safe energy, independent of the Russian Federation.

In an interview with RTL from the Netherlands, Mike Pompeo, discussing the European energy base, said that he knew about the history of relations between Europe and Russia and hoped that the Europeans would make the right decision. He warned them against cooperation with the Russian Federation:

We know that during the conflict Russia will use all possible tools to make it more expensive for Europe to make decisions in its interests.


Dutch journalists asked how likely sanctions would be imposed on Dutch companies participating in the Nord Stream 2 project. They asked whether the United States would apply restrictive measures against them or abandon them. In response, Pompeo said the State Department never discussed sanctions until they were introduced.
