“Breakthrough” from Rosatom will solve the problem of radioactive waste
Rosatom’s ambitious project “Breakthrough”, implemented at the Siberian Chemical Plant, if successful, will, without any doubt, justify its name. The creation of a new technological platform with a closed nuclear cycle will not only solve the problem of accumulation of radioactive waste, but will also increase the rate economic the effectiveness of domestic nuclear power plants.
Currently, work is underway on the sites of the Siberian Chemical Plant located in Seversk as part of the Breakthrough project. In particular, we are talking about the construction of a pilot demonstration energy complex, a plant where a new type of mixed nitride uranium-plutonium fuel will be produced (in the future, all domestic nuclear power will operate on it), the BREST-300 reactor installation, and complex for the processing of radioactive waste (spent fuel).
Recall that earlier Vyacheslav Pershukov, the project manager, announced the return of Rosatom to its original plan, where the commissioning of the production / processing module of the control system is scheduled for 2020. At the same time, the functionary added that the cost of the latest reactor facility could be reduced by 5 billion rubles, thanks to new technological solutions.
