According to the decision of the General Prosecutor of Lithuania, the investigation into the events of January 1991 will be resumed, and the case reopened. Then, on January 13, the Soviet security forces carried out an armed assault on the Vilnius television center.

The representative of the prosecutor’s office, Elena Martinonene, whose duties include public relations, said that although the prosecutor in charge of the case decided to close, a senior justice officer canceled his order and resumed the investigation. According to Martinonene, this was done, as there was a need for certain procedural actions. Which ones, she did not specify.

According to the Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office, the riots in Vilnius in those years were provoked by the highest leadership of the Soviet Union with the aim of returning the republic to the USSR.

The situation in the capital of Lithuania became tense after the republic announced its secession from the USSR in 1990. On the night of January 13, 1991, the Soviet military launched an assault on the Moscow television center. The clashes killed 15 people and injured about 700.

In the “January 13th case” 67 citizens of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus are taking place, most of them in absentia. In particular, a Lithuanian court in absentia sentenced former Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union Dmitry Yazov to 10 years in prison for "war crimes and crimes against humanity."
