After sea trials, the Russian Arctic fleet will be replenished with the third serial universal nuclear-powered icebreaker of project 22220, which received the name "Ural".

The launch ceremony of the new heavy nuclear icebreaker took place at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg.

The ceremony was attended by the head of Rosatom Aleksey Likhachev and the chairman of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina, who became the “godmother” of the Ural icebreaker and, following traditions, broke a bottle of Crimean champagne on its side.

Speaking in a ceremonial speech, Alexei Likhachev announced that the construction of the icebreakers of Project 22220 will continue, and by the end of the summer an agreement will be signed for the construction of two more Arctic nuclear powered ships.

According to Likhachev, the construction of new icebreakers will be financed from several sources at once: the federal budget will allocate 45 billion rubles, and Rosatom and commercial banks will allocate 55 billion rubles.

The universality of the icebreakers of project 22220 is that they can carry out vessels not only through the ice of the deep Arctic, but also in the shallow areas of the Yenisei and the Gulf of Ob, as well as carry out rescue operations in ice conditions.

Recall that Ural was laid in 2016, and its service life will be at least 40 years.
