Prices soared 10 times: in Ukraine, onions become an “exotic” vegetable

5
Throughout Ukraine, an unprecedented rise in price of onions took place. Since the beginning of the year, prices for this vegetable in Nezalezhnaya have risen tenfold, almost like bitcoin.

Ukrainian citizens met new prices with jokes and laughter. Social media users and bloggers compete in wit about this, showing self-irony and optimism. One of them wrote a comic ad:

Replacing two bags of onions on the BMW X6. Surcharge is not needed.

The Onion Crisis was analyzed by the popular travel blogger Sergei Anashkevich in his Zen channel.

He said that in Ukraine this popular and irreplaceable vegetable suddenly became exotic and turned into something like papaya, passion fruit or feijoa. Actually, there is very little exaggeration in this statement. In some regions, the price of onions is twice the cost of oranges. In one of the retail chains, oranges can be bought at 18 hryvnias per kilogram, and onions cost 36 hryvnias.

It is very strange that in an agricultural country locally grown onions are more expensive than imported overseas oranges, the price of which includes shipping costs, duties and other costs.

This phenomenon is explained surprisingly simple. As it turned out, the secret to such a “take-off” lies in inept analysis and planning.

In 2017, the onion crop was so great that prices fell to 3-4 hryvnia. Farmers decided that it was not profitable to grow it, and next year they significantly reduced the sown area. But here, due to heavy rains, a crop failure occurred, not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe. Most of the Ukrainian onions were exported to Europe, while domestic prices soared, 10 times higher than last year.

In general, in Ukraine it’s hard for ordinary people to live, but it’s fun.

What is all about Ukraine. Is it not so in Russia? 50-60 per kilo of onion. Violet 80-90. Cabbage 70. A breakthrough in action.

I translate from Ukrainian into Russian: 36 hryvnia per kilo of onion is about 90 Russian rubles. To catch up with them, Russia still needs to push a little. Under the "villain" Yanukovych, prices and wages in Ukraine were almost twice as low as in Russia, if we count at the exchange rate.

Let's stretch your hands! There will be a breakthrough! may be.
Above write - 50-60r. Little is left if suddenly also a crop failure, for example.
