Europe denied the US a "very sensitive issue"

In March, the US outlined a desire to withdraw from a nuclear deal with Iran if it was not substantially revised. In this matter, Washington is putting pressure on its European allies - Britain, France and Germany. But even these countries seem to understand the dangers of yet another American adventure in the Middle East.

As reported by RIA NewsCiting a “high-ranking European diplomatic source working in Washington,” European countries do not want to renegotiate a deal with Iran regarding its nuclear program, despite US demands.

A source told the Russian agency that Iran’s development of ballistic missiles, and indeed the behavior of this state in the region, should be considered without reference to a nuclear deal.

On May 12, US President Donald Trump intends to decide whether Washington is pulling out of a nuclear deal with Iran. This decision will depend on the results of discussions with London, Paris and Berlin.

It is worth recalling that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program was developed by the so-called “six”, which includes Russia, China, the USA, France, Germany and Britain. After that, a special law was passed in the USA “On consideration of the nuclear agreement with Iran”. It says that every 90 days, the American president considers whether to extend or not extend the regime for lifting sanctions from Tehran.

Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized his predecessor Barack Obama and then Secretary of State John Kerry for an agreement with Iran. While still a presidential candidate, he said that the deal was “bad.” At the same time, he called Kerry "the worst negotiator."

At the beginning of this year, Trump made a rather harsh statement - Washington will withdraw from the nuclear deal if the countries of Europe do not want to correct, as he put it, "the monstrous flaws of the agreement." US Vice President Mike Pence also believes that his country should withdraw from the deal with Iran.

On March 5, a meeting was held between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at which they discussed issues, including those related to Iran. Then the US president said that Europe has so far introduced “purely cosmetic changes” into the nuclear deal that do not suit him.

Trump “forgets” that, in addition to the United States and three European countries, the treaty has two more signatories - Russia and China. Both of these countries are members of the UN Security Council. The nuclear deal agreement was enshrined in UNSC resolution No. 2231. Therefore, amendments to this agreement must also be approved by the Security Council. And without the consent of Russia and China, this is impossible to achieve.

Russia's position on Iran was confirmed during a meeting of the presidents of the two countries - Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani - in Ankara. According to the results of this meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, Moscow and Tehran have a common position: the agreement must be maintained.

It should be expected that the “nuclear deal” will not be revised to please Washington either by Russia, or by the countries of Europe, or by China. In this case, the United States may declare withdrawal from it and take unilateral tough measures against Iran. But it is unlikely that Donald Trump will be able to get significant support in this matter from the European allies. There is another problem - if Washington demonstrates how it has treated Iran, the DPRK leadership will draw the appropriate conclusions. But Trump has considerable hopes that it will be possible to conclude a "nuclear deal" with Pyongyang.
