Russian ISS modules will receive protection from armored fabric

0
The new modules, which in the coming years will become part of the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS), will receive protection from meteorites from Russian-made armored fabric. We are talking about scientific and energy (NEM) and nodal (UM) modules.

This information is provided in the journal. "Space Engineering and Technology"manufactured by the Rocket and Space Corporation Energia.

To protect the modules will be used basalt and body armor fabric. Being involved in the structure of the intermediate screen, in terms of their technical characteristics, they turned out to be no worse than the Nextel and Kevlar materials developed by the Americans and used by NASA in the main protective screens.

The last two modules will be sent to the International Space Station in 2021 (NEM) and 2022 (UM).

Prior to this, the creation of the screens of the ISS modules was exclusively done by the American side. The functional cargo block (FGB), created first by NASA, used the protection created in the USA. The anti-meteorite system of the multifunctional laboratory module (MLM-U), the commissioning of which is scheduled for next year, is almost no different from the protection installed in the FGB.
