China will build the world's largest LNG tanker

China will begin to develop an ultra-modern tanker for the transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The need for such a vessel is long overdue, but only now it has been decided to begin its construction.

The development of the new tanker will be carried out by the Chinese shipbuilding company Khudong Zhonghua and the DNV GL certification company from Norway. They have already signed an agreement between them.

Recall that “Khudong Zhonghua” is currently the only shipbuilding company in China that has technical and financial capabilities for the construction of such large international-class vessels capable of transporting large volumes of liquefied natural gas. Over the past eleven years, the company launched 21 vessels.

The tanker, which is planned to be built jointly, will become the largest vessel in the world designed for LNG transportation. Presumably, its capacity will be up to 270 thousand cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.

So far, the No. 1 tanker in the world carrying LNG transportation is the Qatari Mozah, launched 12 years ago - in 2007. Its capacity is up to 266 thousand cubic meters of LNG. Thus, if a Chinese ship is built, it will surpass its Qatari counterpart.

The exact timing of the start and completion of construction has not yet been specified. It is only known that at the end of 2020 it is planned to complete the preparation of technical documentation for the project.

There is no doubt that China has an acute need for such a vessel. After all, LNG consumption in China is growing, and accordingly there is a request to increase the supply of liquefied natural gas, and for this we need appropriate transportation.
