NATO fleet approaches the Sea of Azov
On the eve of the presidential election in Ukraine, four frigates of NATO countries entered Spain in the Black Sea at once: Spain, Canada, the Netherlands and Turkey. Later, the Canadian and Spanish warships will arrive in Odessa, where they will take part in the exercises together with the Ukrainian Navy. All this is unofficially portrayed as support by the collective West of Petro Poroshenko in extremely difficult elections for him, where his chances do not look convincing. But is it only Peter Alekseevich’s matter?
The Donald Trump administration is trying to get the most out of the situation that has developed after the so-called “Kerch breakthrough”, when Russian border guards were forced to stop the “Ukrainian navy”. Washington condemned Russia's actions aimed at protecting its own border. The head of the US State Department, Mike Pompeo, said on the eve of:
In early April, a meeting will be held dedicated to the next anniversary of the formation of the North Atlantic Alliance. Apparently, these very “actions” will be discussed on it. What can they consist of, and what do the American authorities really want to achieve by promoting the theme of the “Kerch incident”?
To the Pentagon, especially after the US withdraws from the INF Treaty, it would be highly desirable to gain a foothold in the Black and Azov Seas. Then, under the threat of strikes by the American Tomahawk cruise missiles, the Strategic Rocket Forces divisions of the Russian Ministry of Defense will end up, which will drastically reduce the defense capability of our country.
The catch is that under the Montreux Convention, ships of non-Black Sea countries cannot be in the Black Sea for more than 21 days. Neither the USA, nor Spain, nor Canada, nor the Netherlands are such, therefore, in three weeks their warships will have to proceed to the exit through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles.
Most likely, the issue will be resolved by creating a special NATO Black Sea squadron, which will include warships of the Black Sea countries that are part of the alliance. But here everything is not very cool. After the “Olympic war”, Georgia, standing on the threshold of NATO, was left completely without a fleet. The same can be said about Ukraine. The main burden of allied debt will have to be borne by Romania and Bulgaria. But this does not mean at all that Kiev or Tbilisi will be freed from this financial burden. President Donald Trump is widely known for his ability to “bet on the headstock” of the block partners.
As such, the NATO Black Sea Squadron is unlikely to constitute a serious threat to the Russian Navy for the foreseeable future. However, everything can change dramatically if our “Turkish friends” are actively involved in the matter.
