Erdogan proposed returning the status of a mosque to Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, once again over many centuries, can again change its status.

In an interview with TGRT, Turkish President Recep Erdogan said that to ensure free access to the Hagia Sophia, its status could be changed from a museum to a mosque. As an example, he cited the nearby Blue Mosque, which anyone can visit for free.

According to him, the status change may occur after the municipal elections in Turkey.

The famous religious building, the pearl of world architecture, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was built in the VI century in the center of Constantinople under Emperor Justinian I.

After the capture of Constantinople by the Turks under the leadership of Sultan Mehmed II in 1453, the cathedral was transformed into a mosque, having undergone a number of changes in architecture and internal structure.

By a decree of 1935, signed by Kemal Ataturk, Hagia Sophia received the status of a museum, in which it remains until today. Entrance to the museum costs 60 Turkish lira or 10 US dollars.

In conclusion, we can say that if a change in the status of the cathedral does occur, it will not cause any resonance and no consequences. In this case, this is the internal affair of Turkey, which is more interested in the Muslims of this country.

What is the Istanbul Patriarchate doing about this? Demands the return of "Sophia" to the Orthodox Church?
