Detailed characteristics of the most powerful rocket engine, which is being developed by NPO Energomash for Roskosmos, were disclosed on the eve of a video published in the state corporation’s official twitter account. It is worth noting that according to the information presented, in terms of power, the unit can be compared with a large power plant.
So, RD-171MV, which, according to preliminary data, is intended for installation on Irtysh (Soyuz-5) missiles, has a mass of 10 tons. At the same time, its power is 264 hp, and traction is 000 tons.
The first deliveries of finished units are scheduled for 2021. At Roskosmos, the RD-171MV has already been dubbed the “most powerful in the world” rocket engine. However, it must be borne in mind that we are talking specifically about liquid power plants.
Recall that the main competitor of Roscosmos, the American SpaceX corporation, has already managed to launch several successful launches of its “reusable” Falcon 9 rocket. In order for the module to return to Earth and make a soft landing, 8 out of 9 installed Merlin engines are switched off. But at the moment nothing is known about whether the first stage of the Irtysh apparatus, equipped with RD-171MV, will return.
