Samsung introduced ultrafast RAM

1
This week, Samsung Electronics demonstrated a 64-gigabyte RDIMM memory module, created on the basis of 16 Gb microcircuits, and intended primarily for servers. This year, the company promises to release 128 and 256 GB modules for the same purposes, but despite this, personal computer users also have something to expect from the new development.

The speed of the new DDR4 chips is 2666 MTransfers / sec at a voltage of 1,2 V. Technology the production is kept secret, but Samsung reports that they use a certain “advanced” manufacturing process. Among all other advantages, the new 64 GB modules are characterized by 20% lower power consumption than their counterparts on 8 GB chips.

The new chips will allow the development of a 32 GB device for a wide market. For owners of desktop PCs based on Intel Core i7 and i9 processors, this means the ability to install a total of 256 GB of RAM on their machine (if it supports 16 GB of the chip and DIMM based on them). 4GB DDR16 chips are already on sale for module manufacturers, but Samsung has not yet revealed the partners of the company who will use them.

The cost of the new 128 and 256 GB modules can only be guessed at, but given the prices of competitors (128 GB DDR4 LRDIMM from Crucial costs $ 4000), the amount will be impressive.

Oh, and not so long ago ... you could use 640 KB of RAM, which forced programmers to squeeze their brainchildren into this Procrustean bed. The remaining 384 could be put on a virtual disk so as not to torment the floppy disk for every reason.
