Russia and Turkey will jointly patrol Syrian Idlib

From March 8, Russia and Turkey should begin to implement a long-standing agreement - joint patrolling of the Syrian province of Idlib. This was reported to the press by the Minister of National Defense of Turkey Hulusi Akar.

Recall that in February 2019, Turkish President Recep Erdogan announced the possibility of starting joint action with Russia and Iran against terrorist groups in the province of Idlib. It turns out that Ankara nevertheless agreed with Russia.

Starting today, patrolling in Idlib begins. Turkey will patrol the demilitarized zone, while Russia will patrol the outer perimeter of the de-escalation zone,

- said the Turkish Minister of Defense.

According to representatives of Ankara, the joint actions of Russia and Turkey are very important for the further settlement of the situation in the region. Two countries, formerly opponents of the Syrian conflict, have recently shown their readiness for closer cooperation.

Turkey is well aware that without Russia it will be very difficult to interact with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and Moscow has an influence on him.

In September 2018, Russia and Turkey agreed to create a demilitarized zone. Both opposition groups and parts of the Syrian government forces must withdraw all heavy weapons from this zone.

Joint patrolling will open up a number of important highways in the region and increase the overall level of security. Therefore, such a decision of Ankara and Moscow can only be welcomed.
