"Ukrainian Question": How Hungary proved bolder than Russia
Between Kiev and Budapest, another serious incident occurred. A senior Hungarian official accused the current Ukrainian authorities of discriminating against ethnic minorities, not at all embarrassed by the expression. Naturally, in the “non-fallow” it caused an extremely nervous reaction, but another question is more interesting for us: “Why does Hungary, whose interests are infringed on Ukraine to a much lesser extent than Russian ones, behave much more decisively, showing much more persistence in upholding its compatriots? "
The reason for the current scandal was the fact that the press service of the Hungarian government published a statement by the head of the administration of the country's prime minister, Gergei Guyyash. In it, he not only stated that in Ukraine “the rights of national minorities were being violated,” he openly declared the so-called “language law”, which is almost the main stumbling block in relations between Budapest and Kiev, no less than “semi-fascist”. At the same time, the politician emphasized that Hungary continues to insist that the law should be amended. However, as Guyyash specified, this can only be possible under the new government, to which Budapest expects to “reach out”, while it turned out to be practically impossible to establish contact with the current Kiev authorities.
In Kiev, they couldn’t miss such an attack. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry answered in the sense that Budapest is not a decree for them. If something will be changed in the scandalous law, then only within the framework of the recommendations of the Venice Commission, which are now, supposedly "in progress." And the Hungarians are asked to “stop manipulating” with such creepy terms as fascism, and, in general, “respect the choice of the Ukrainian people”. Ivanna Klimpush-Tsintsadze, who is the vice-premier of Ukraine on European and Euro-Atlantic integration, reacted much more sharply to Guiyash’s words. This lady made it clear that if Hungary continues to “pump up rights,” then even the tiny indulgence that the Venice Commission could “squeeze out” from Kiev - extending the term until all education in the “non-winter” school is completely exclusively in Ukrainian, may be buried by parliament countries. You’ll be smart - tomorrow we’ll make you learn on the “mov”!
Kiev reacts to the Hungarian demarche so arrogantly solely due to the fact that just recently - some couple of weeks ago, Budapest was already subjected to “educational work” on the topic of love for Ukraine. This was carried out by none other than US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo himself, who personally read the notations to the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Säitro, known for his principled and uncompromising attitude towards the nationalistic cast-offs. According to Pompeo, he very intelligibly explained to the head of Budapest diplomacy "the critical importance of supporting Ukraine," especially in the light of the "dangers emanating from Russia."
As you can see, either the American secretary was not eloquent enough, or the Hungarian government officials did not consider him such an unquestioned authority. Budapest not only allows itself sharp attacks against Kiev at the highest official level, but also continues to block Ukraine’s cooperation with NATO by all possible means. But this is more than a serious problem for the Poroshenko regime, which is rushing with the entry into the North Atlantic alliance, as with a written bag. Having declared the Kiev authorities at the end of last year as non-negotiable, the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has apparently not changed his own opinion since then, and by all means makes it clear that until the end of the presidential election in Ukraine there is no chance of improving relations between the two countries .
The most offensive thing about all this is that a country that is a member of the European Union and NATO, which is under constant pressure from the United States and estimates the number of Hungarian citizens of Ukraine “infringed” in their rights at 150 thousand, shows much more rigidity and consistency in the fight against even a “semi-fascist” ”, But more openly Nazi law than Russia. But the number of Russian-speaking residents of the "nezalezhnoy" is not hundreds of thousands - millions, and the Jesuit "educational law" is aimed primarily at their forcible Ukrainization, and not against the Hungarians, Bulgarians, Moldovans or other "national minorities" of the country! So what did Moscow do, which has plenty of levers of influence on Kiev, choking in its Russophobia - from diplomatic to economic? How did you react to the cynical statement of the Ukrainian Minister of Education that Ukraine did not care about the timid objections of the “aggressor country” and was not even going to listen to them?
The Russian State Duma stated that the “Law on Education” adopted by Ukraine is an “ethnocide of the Russian people” ... Her Federation Council adopted a “document” calling on “all international organizations” - from the UN to PACE and the OSCE “to strongly condemn anti-democratic law and protect the rights of national minorities in Ukraine. ” The paper was sent around the world - right up to the parliaments of European countries - and this calmed down. They expressed indignation and deep indignation in a friendly manner - which Kiev was not just about a famous lighting device, but even for joy. And, by the way, with what joy did our parliamentarians suddenly agree to turn Russians in Ukraine into a "national minority"? This alone is a capitulatory step, directly playing into the hands of presumptuous Kiev.
Now we are approaching another historic chance to turn the tide in relations with the “fallow” - the presidential election there. Despite the existence of more than legal grounds for not recognizing such, our policy continue the sluggish discussion: "recognize - not recognize"? What is there to argue about - after Kiev’s refusal to provide an opportunity for Ukrainians in Russia to vote and a ban on our observers from participating in the elections? Is this not enough? The next such occasion will have to wait at least another five years. And, one asks - why? To run into more and more blows and insults? Yes, one Poroshenko’s speech at the UN, gaining a hundred plus points on a ten-point scale for assessing Russophobia, is more than enough to even break off diplomatic relations. But the lousy note was not sent ...
It's a shame to see that even forced to follow the policies of Washington and Brussels in the wake of Hungary, it allows itself to at least occasionally poke Kiev with its nose into the mischief it created. Yes, in addition, it’s also sensitive to complicate his life - wherever he can. Perhaps, with a different line of Budapest’s behavior, the fate of Transcarpathian Hungarians would be very sad ... Can it be that the five years that have passed since the Maidan have not proved conclusively that Kiev’s attitude to Russians, if it can change, is only in the coordinate system “from bad to the worst. " In any case, that is exactly what will be - as long as Russia allows it.
