Israel Katz: “The Poles absorbed anti-Semitism with mother’s milk”

The memory of the tragic events of World War II leaves its mark on relations between Israel and Poland.

The head of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Israel Katz, refused to make concessions to Poland and did not apologize for his statements that the Poles are accomplices of the Holocaust.

Moreover, he emphasized that he did not regret his words “about Polish participation in the Holocaust,” and added: “Many Poles collaborated with the Nazis.”

The scandal began to flare up after the Israeli Foreign Minister commented on the words of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the cooperation of the Poles with the Nazis. Literally, Katz stated that "the Poles absorbed anti-Semitism with their mother’s milk."

This act of the Israeli diplomat caused such a resonance that the American ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, had to intervene in the situation.

Mosbacher tried to put pressure on Katz and make him apologize to Poland over the diplomatic scandal that began after Netanyahu's statements.

However, as the events with which this little note begins, the Israeli leadership is confident in its rightness and is not going to back down even under pressure from the United States.

In fact, Mosbacher’s “appearance” can be regarded as Washington’s empty formal gesture: Israel occupies a place on the US scale of values that is incommensurably higher than Poland.
