US plans to build an orbital station on the ideas of Tsiolkovsky
Artificial gravity caused by centrifugal force was considered as a concept back in 1903. The idea was first voiced by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and then “picked up” by von Braun. She would have remained to this day in theory, if not for the private American company Gateway Foundation.
The designers are going to create an orbital station that will look like a giant (500 meters in diameter) Ferris wheel with a hub and spokes. This shape of the object was not chosen by chance. As is known from the above theory, artificial gravity is created due to inertia and centrifugal force during rotation of the wheel.
As conceived by the developers, modules will be located on the outside of the “rim”. In the future, they plan to sell them to space agencies and private companies. With the central part, where the parking dock for spacecraft is located, they will be connected by four elevators.
The construction of the station is planned to be carried out directly in space. According to preliminary estimates by the Gateway Foundation, the implementation of their project will require about $ 300 billion, which the company intends to raise in a year through a lottery. By the way, the main prize of the draw will be the opportunity to live on a new orbital station immediately after the launch of the latter.
