Former colony: how the USA became a world empire

2
The United States of America today has vast possessions, including overseas. The former British colony managed to become a full-fledged empire itself. They bought something, such as Alaska from Russia. They took the rest by military means, mainly from another decrepit European metropolis, Spain. And the Spanish-American war of 1898 began with a banal provocation in the spirit of the "case of the Skripals."

A few years before, anti-colonial uprisings had begun in Cuba against the authorities of Madrid. The Americans sent their "ichtamnets" to help the Cubans. It is curious that Franklin Roosevelt acted as the commander of one of the units of these “vacationers”. In 1889, Washington sent the obsolete battleship Maine to Cuba.

On February 15, the ship was viciously blown up, but by an amazing coincidence, the majority of white officers were on the shore and were not injured. Killed 266 ordinary sailors, among whom were many blacks. Naturally, the Americans blamed the Spanish “Juan Petrov” and “Pedro Boshirov” for the explosion, who else? True, many years later it became clear that the battleship went down with the crew due to an internal explosion, but who cares now?

Washington demanded that Spain withdraw troops from Cuba and began the blockade of the island. In response, Madrid was forced to declare war on the United States, in which it had no chance of victory. And so it happened.

Then the Americans descended on the Philippines, which for centuries had been the possession of the Spanish crown, and sank its outdated squadron, sending 7 ships to the bottom. After they landed the landing. In a naval battle, the US Navy lost 7 people wounded. It is difficult to call this “battle” anything other than beating. Over the next half century, the archipelago has become American possessions. For the Philippines, Washington graciously gave Madrid $ 20 million in compensation.

In another theater of war in the Caribbean, the Spaniards also suffered a complete fiasco. Near Cuba, the Americans sent to the bottom of the Spanish squadron of seven ships. They themselves lost one killed and 10 wounded. Cuba was also occupied by the US Marine Corps, and a puppet regime was set up in Havana. After the island of Puerto Rico was captured, where American casualties amounted to 3 people. It is quite possible to call these “military operations” an easy walk on a “picnic”. By the way, at the same time Hawaiian Islands were annexed to the noise.

In December 1889, a peace treaty was signed, according to which Madrid renounced its rights to Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines, Guam. This is how the “guys from Washington,” how they can solve problems with weakened empires. At the cost of the lives of several hundred of their compatriots, the United States significantly expanded their overseas possessions. Since then, alas, nothing has changed. The US and its allies continue to brazenly fabricate charges: they show a test tube with a certain powder before the invasion of Iraq, the "poisoned Skripals" as an excuse for imposing sanctions, stage a chemical attack to accuse the Syrian authorities and get an excuse to launch rocket fire or intervention. This should be well remembered. And it all began with the blasting of the battleship "Maine" 121 years ago.
