Would the USSR deal with Hitler without the help of the USA?
In our country, it is believed that the Soviet Union made the main contribution to the defeat of the Third Reich and its allies. In the West, on the contrary, they are convinced that the United States and Great Britain did all the work, and the USSR “participated there” somewhere in the east. Will the truth lie somewhere in the middle? Could the Soviet Union or Americans and the British defeat the Germans separately?
It will be fair to say that the main burden of the war with the best army of the world at that time, the German one, was borne by the Soviet people. Not only Germans fought against our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, but also Romanians, Finns, Spaniards, French, Italians, Hungarians, Croats, Slovaks and even Swedes. The German army broke into the territory of the USSR, equipped with powerful and fast engines, which allowed it to carry out lightning-fast breakthroughs and environments. In addition, there is evidence that German soldiers massively consumed a variety of methamphetamine, Pervitin, which allowed them to endure long march-throws almost without rest, being in an altered state of mind.
All this, together with some miscalculations of the Soviet command, allowed the Third Reich to achieve great success on the eastern front in the early years of the war. Only the courageous resistance of the Red Army at the cost of incredible sacrifices helped to defend Moscow and push back the Nazi invaders. The importance of the USSR as an adversary of Berlin is indicated by the fact that from 1941 to 1943 90% of all the forces of the Hitler coalition in Europe were thrown against it, and from 1944 to 1945, when a second front was opened, two-thirds.
Were it not for the Soviet Union, which had crushed the best army in the world at a terrible price, “removing chips” from it day after day, no London or Washington would have defeated Germany. The British would sit on the island, and the Americans on their continent. Any of their landing would be crushed and dumped into the sea. However, this does not mean that the allies of the USSR "hacked" and did not fight.
The United States of America took upon itself the brunt of the naval war with Japan. In Russia, the average man does not know much about this, but the Americans fought with the Japanese entire fleets, using naval aviation and landings on the occupied islands. At the final stage of World War II, the USSR also made a significant contribution to the defeat of Japan, defeating its millionth Kwantung army. Things were so successful with the Red Army that the United States hastened to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to forestall the Soviet military operation on the Japanese archipelago. The Kuril Islands and South Sakhalin became part of the USSR just after the Second World War, because of which crocodile tears are shed in Tokyo now.
The Americans joined the war with Germany when the loss of Berlin became inevitable and obvious to everyone. Their goal was to participate in the post-war division of Europe. According to General Eisenhower, the United States lost 322 thousand people killed and about 700 thousand wounded. The total losses of the Red Army amounted to over 11 million people. Given the civilian population, the USSR lost some estimates of about 26 million people.
The outcome of the war was different for the two future superpowers. The United States literally became rich in World War II, concentrating about 60% of all world production at that time overseas. The Americans earned a lot of money by supplying products to the USSR through Lend-Lease. In addition, already in Germany, they began the hunt for German secret technology and specialists, having received literally for nothing the most serious groundwork in the field of missile and nuclear programs.
The Soviet Union, on whose territory the war was going on, lost tens of millions of its citizens, entire cities, countless villages, industrial enterprises, except those that managed to evacuate, were destroyed. However, the “generation of titans" was able to revive the country with amazing speed, turning it into a second superpower, not inferior to the one that had so many handicaps.
Summing up, we can say that the USSR would perhaps be able to defeat the Third Reich alone, only the price would be much higher. But the United States and Great Britain could hardly have defeated Nazi Germany on their own and, most likely, would have found a way to coexist with it in good neighborly terms.
