NATO gathers fleet to war with Russia: what should we expect?
A bad example is contagious. Following the United States, Germany and Great Britain enter the arms race. This time, Western Europe is preparing to confront not only Russia, but also China.
Germany
The other day, German Minister of Defense Ursula von der Layen defiantly took part not even in the laying, but the very first metal cutting for the Köln corvette, the head of the new series of the K130 project. The corvette will be commissioned in 2022. If you look at the characteristics, the new product of the German Navy is not striking in comparison with Russian counterparts, patrol ships of the 2nd rank. In terms of a number of indicators, for example, armament and speed, our Corvette Correspondent, Boyky, Steregushchiy and Persistent corvettes will surpass competitors. The problem is different.
Today, the Baltic Fleet has only 4 ships of the corresponding class. Even when the entire series of the “Guardians” is built, they will be scattered across the four fleets of the Russian Navy. The Germans in the Baltic will have 10 corvettes. And also nearby are Poland, Denmark and other NATO countries that have their own military fleets. Thus, by 2022, the North Atlantic Alliance will dominate the Baltic Sea, with the ability to block and even “crush” the Kaliningrad region. By the way, besides 2022, the launch of the Rail Baltica railway is expected, which will connect Western Europe with the Baltic countries, accelerating the process of military transfer equipment from Germany, where the main US forces are located.
United Kingdom
The former "mistress of the seas" is actively building up its military potential. So, in 2017, the newest British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth was launched. It will house F-35 fighter-bombers and helicopters, attack and transport, as well as up to 250 royal marines. In the future, the appearance of a second aircraft carrier of this type is expected.
But this does not exhaust the UK’s “projection of power” capabilities abroad. Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson has announced plans to create a new type of amphibious assault ship called the Littoral Strike Ships. What is it?
Surprisingly, the British decided to start making assault landing ships based on ferries and other civilian vessels. After such a conversion, each such vessel will be able to carry a helicopter group, high-speed boats and up to 400 marines. Through the modernization of existing peace ships, the UK will be able to quickly and relatively cheaply get a real landing fleet.
Why, more precisely, against whom is London building up its shock capabilities? Secretary of Defense Williamson says the range of uses is wide, from “crisis support,” to fighting:
One “littoral” strike force will be deployed in the East, in the Indo-Pacific region, the second in the West, covering the Baltic, Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Comments will be redundant.

If we need, our two Littoral Strike Ship, our two aircraft carriers, our two landing helicopter dock ships, Albion and Bulwark, and our three landing transport docks of the Bay type can be combined into one amphibious operational connection.
