Without battery: smartphones of the future will be powered by Wi-Fi

Modern “smart” gadgets demonstrate a wide variety of features that make our life much easier. However, all such devices have one common need - a power source. Not for nothing that we check the battery level in the smartphone, leaving the house?

And so, scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology decided to invent an alternative way to power electronic devices, which involves receiving a charge directly "from the air." Or rather, from electromagnetic fields. The possibility of "turning" radio waves into electricity has long been known. There are even so-called rectifying antennas.

But, American researchers suggest using Wi-Fi to power gadgets, without which today, probably, not a single human dwelling can do, at least in cities. The antenna proposed by scientists allows you to convert alternating current to direct due to the connection to a 2D semiconductor with a thickness of several atoms. In the future, on its basis it will be possible to create portable gadgets that do not require batteries.

Moreover, according to the developers, the radio signal converter will resemble a film, which will allow it to be used even in flexible smartphones. So, one of the inventors, Thomas Palacios, stated that the goal of the project is to make every object around us “smart”.
