In anticipation of digital immortality: is it worth freezing the brain?

The plot of transplanting the human mind into a computer is quite popular among science fiction writers, and many people would not mind such a transformation. And now, the startup company Netcome, with the support of the Y Combinator business incubator, intends to make this dream a reality. So far it is only a complicated procedure for preserving the brain for a long time.

The goal is to preserve all the neural connections of a person, his memories and knowledge. The team behind the project, led by Michael McCann and Robert MacIntyre, received the Brain Preservation Prize two years ago, an award for the successful development and application of the cryopreservation method. Scientists managed to unfreeze the brain of a rabbit and a pig, while preserving all the neural connections. In February 2018, the company reported on successful tests that were already carried out on the human brain, which was extracted from a deceased elderly woman, which was the first successful experiment of this type. This procedure is called vitrification.

You can pre-order services on the company’s website now. It will cost you a relatively small amount of $ 10. For this money, the company will extract your brain after death with its subsequent vitrification. If the client decided to change his mind during his life - the funds are returned in full. At the same time, it should be noted that the company does not give any guarantees about the digital immortality of your mind. Their goal is only to preserve your brain until then, until it becomes possible. It is also not noted whether the procedure will be conducted by Netcome or by a completely different company.

The company is financed from various sources, including the already mentioned Y Combinator fund, as well as the United States Institute of National Mental Health, which allocated 960 thousand dollars for the project.
