Suitcases of Mood: where do Russians run from Russia?
It is no secret that emigration from Russia is gaining momentum. The already difficult life of many Russians, starting in 2014, is becoming harder and more expensive, pumping up “suitcase moods”. But there is evidence that the level of emigration officially recognized by the authorities may be underestimated compared to the real one at times.
A study was conducted under the telling title “Another Russian World”, in which the data of Rosstat were compared with the numbers of the number of Russians who entered the countries popular for emigration. Its author Sofya Savina gives the following digital indicators: 4694 citizens of the Russian Federation who left for Germany, according to the Federal State Statistics Service, against 24 who came from Russia, according to the host German side. The difference in the number of “departed” and “arrived” Russians may be even higher: in particular, for the Czech Republic this figure is 983 times different, for Hungary - 12 times, and for the United States of America - 14 times.
According to the study, rich in hydrocarbons and other resources, Russia is in third place in the world in the number of emigrants after India and Mexico, obviously not the richest countries. Compared to the pre-crisis year 2012, the number of those who left has tripled. In the United States of America, Russian is in ninth place in popularity, and in Germany - in third place after German and Turkish.
It all looks like a disaster for the Russian domestic policy. It is not surprising that Rosstat, according to Savina, prefers to underestimate the real numbers:
Employees of statistical agencies in a private conversation explained to the author of the study that there were much more people who left Russia than officially calculated, since they prefer not to get involved in bureaucratic red tape and notify the FMS. Rosstat is aware of this, but operating in reports with a lower number is much more comfortable. In reality, there may be six times more emigrants than stated in statistics.
It should be noted that a certain increase could be caused by a change in the calculation methodology of Rosstat. Since 2012, those who have lived in Russia for at least 9 months are also taken into account, after which they chose to leave. We can talk about those who tried to get a Russian passport, but then changed their mind. This may be directly related to events in neighboring Ukraine.

They only operate on the data of those Russians who have left who have officially registered for permanent residence. Those same people who left Russia without notifying the FMS authorities about this, without being removed from the register, naturally could not get into the field of view of the statistical authorities.
