American general: there will be no US troops on the South Kuril Islands

The US refutes the possibility of deploying troops and military facilities on the South Kuril Islands if the islands are transferred to Japan. This was announced at a press conference in Tokyo by the commander of American forces in Japan, Lieutenant General Jerry Martinez.





The security agreement concluded between the USA and Japan implies for the American side the possibility of deploying its military units anywhere in Japan, but only with the permission of Tokyo.

If Japan suddenly receives, as she insists, the islands of Habomai, Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan, then American troops could theoretically be deployed on them. This, in turn, will become a serious threat to Russian national interests.

However, it’s premature to talk about the possibility of transferring the islands. Tokyo considers the settlement of territorial disputes as one of the key conditions for concluding a peace treaty. Shinzo Abe promised to resolve the issue in 2019.

But Moscow claims that the South Kuril Islands became part of Russia following the Second World War and their belonging to our country cannot be in doubt. It is therefore surprising that the American general allows himself to reason about the South Kuril Islands as if they were no longer in Russian jurisdiction.
