Russia will force Europe to abandon sanctions

Anti-Russian sanctions are increasingly resented in Europe. This is due to the changes taking place in European policy. So, on March 4, 2018, 32% of the vote in the Italian parliament was received by the 5 Star Movement, which criticized the current course of both the country and the European Union.

On March 12, the Vice-President of the European Parliament (EP) Fabio Massimo Castaldo, who represents the 5 Star Movement, openly stated that sanctions against Russia have no positive consequences for Europe. Huge Russia will live without Europe, but for a European producer, even a partial loss of such a huge market is a real disaster.

The politician believes that as a result of anti-Russian sanctions, tremendous damage was caused and the economy European Union, and Italian business. But sanctions did not lead to the results that Brussels had expected to see. Nevertheless, the leadership of the European Union continues to adhere to the course chosen in 2014. So, on March 12, it also became known that the Council of the European Union extended sanctions against 150 individuals and 38 organizations from the Russian Federation for another six months. Why is this necessary if the majority of both Russian and European experts talk about the futility of the sanctions policy? For Brussels, sanctions are not even a political issue, but an ideological one. They are necessary to demonstrate a negative attitude towards Russia and its government, to emphasize that Russia is a kind of "outcast" for Europe. Naturally, the US forces Brussels to maintain anti-Russian sanctions, which in practice turn out to be anti-European.

Meanwhile, sanctions are hitting the European economy. Most affected are European medium and small businesses, which before imposing sanctions exported their products to Russia. This was also said by Fabio Castaldo. The Deputy President of the European Parliament said that in a situation where Brussels does not want to abandon the policy of sanctions against Russia, the only way out for countries that do not want to suffer economic losses should be to use the veto in the Council of Europe.

Italy is one of those countries in Europe where opponents of sanctions are gaining more and more weight in political life. It is known that many Italian deputies even visited Crimea and spoke about the need to recognize it as part of Russia. In the current situation, the 5 Star Movement will seek the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions and a review of Italy and the European Union’s policy in general with regard to Russia. Italy will not be lonely in this regard, since the leaders and leading politicians of Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and several other European states speak about the need to update the course towards Russia.

For Europe, it is now more profitable to be friends with Russia, maintain normal economic relations with it, rather than ruin your own economy with sanctions. And if the leadership of the European Union does not understand this, then, as the growing dissatisfaction with the sanctions among the Europeans themselves shows, sooner or later, Russia will anyway force Brussels to abandon its vicious policy.
