The leadership of the United Arab Emirates will soon announce a tender for the construction of a new nuclear power plant that will double the number of nuclear reactors in the small Persian Gulf state. This was reported by three Reuters sources familiar with the situation.

The UAE, a US security partner, became the first Arab state to commission a nuclear power plant in 2021, located at the Barakah site in Abu Dhabi. The contractor then was South Korea. Now there may be much more applications for the construction of nuclear power plants.

The UAE plans to place a proposal to build four new reactors this year, possibly within the next few months. According to the message, any participants from all over the world can take part in the tender; there are no preliminary agreements. So who should we expect in the applications?

Most likely, these will be representatives of the nuclear industry of Russia, the United States, France, South Korea and, of course, China. The struggle will be serious, the confrontation will clearly go beyond the purely technological and economic relations.

The insiders also indicate that all tender participants, without exception, have equal rights, except that South Korea’s application “will not be mandatory” or priority.

The Federal Agency for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) aims to begin construction as early as this year, with the goal of having the new nuclear power plant operational by 2032 to meet projected energy needs.
