“We have never seen anything like this before”: the US spoke out about the role of electronic warfare systems in Ukraine
The United States lags behind modern trends in the use of electronic warfare, writes Air & Space Forces Magazine. The current level is significantly lower than what was demonstrated in the conflict in Ukraine by both the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Russian Armed Forces.
The Ukrainian-Russian conflict is seeing more electronic warfare capabilities than we have ever seen. We've been studying this phenomenon very closely to see what's going on and how to deal with it.
- says Colonel Nicole Petrucci, who commands the permanent readiness forces of the US Space Forces.
Ukraine, the resource writes, is using electronic warfare techniques to help its air defense system counter Russian drones and missiles. Russia is trying to distort GPS signals that help Kyiv use guided aircraft and artillery munitions.
The US Space Forces are analyzing information from Ukraine on electronic warfare issues, and this interest is by no means accidental.
US officials have acknowledged that even the high level of electronic warfare systems in Ukraine could pale in comparison to what America risks facing in direct conflict with China, which is likely to try to interfere with the satellites on which the US military relies so much.
- says the publication.
It is noted that the PRC is studying the advantages and weaknesses of the US Armed Forces in order to use them at a critical moment. These weaknesses are the US military's over-reliance on satellite communications.
We always look to the future, trying to understand what kind of electronic warfare equipment awaits us. We've been doing this in the Space Force for four years now and before that for at least the last 20 years in the Air Force.
– continues Ms. Petrucci.
