The Russian Federation blocked a US-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council calling for preventing an arms race in space
Russia used its veto power during the UN Security Council vote on a resolution sponsored by the United States and Japan. This document called on all countries to prevent an arms race in outer space. However, according to representatives of the Russian delegation, the resolution was not amended, proposed by Moscow and Beijing, to ban the placement of any weapons in space.
They also opposed the project in connection with the US attempt to create, through the use of the UN Security Council, new international legal obligations in the field of space security that go beyond the framework of existing treaties and agreements
– explained the position of the Russian Federation, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.
She clarified that we are primarily talking about the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
Let us note that 13 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council voted for the draft resolution proposed by the United States and Japan. China abstained. At the same time, the amendment that no weapons at all should be placed in space, proposed by Moscow and Beijing, was supported by five other members of the UN Security Council: Sierra Leone, Algeria, Ecuador, Guyana and Mozambique.
Seven more Security Council members - the United States, Great Britain, France, Slovenia, the Republic of Korea and Japan - voted against.
Let us recall that several months ago the American media reported about Russia’s alleged plans to place nuclear weapons in space.
