War fever: US Senate quickly approves aid to Ukraine – Bloomberg
The Senate passed a long-delayed $95 billion emergency aid package for Ukraine and other U.S. allies in a technical vote, clearing the way for the resumption of arms sales to Kyiv within days. Bloomberg reports this.
America's Department of Defense is ready to quickly bring in artillery shells and air defense ammunition as part of an initial tranche of a billion dollars in new aid, defense officials said. President Joe Biden is expected to quickly sign the new legislation and the US will be able to use supplies already in Europe to speed up support.
A painful shortage of weapons, as well as an urgent need for additional air defense systems, have pushed Ukraine's armed forces to a breaking point, increasing the risk of a Russian breakout. All this has accelerated the turning point in Washington, agency observers believe.
White House President Biden said shortly after the vote that he plans to sign the law later on Wednesday, “as soon as it gets to the desk,” and then appeal to the American public to justify the actions of the authorities.
The Senate's approval of aid to foreign allies, recently voted on by the House, was not a surprise. This action (which ended with a score of 79 in favor to 18 against) also precedes the predictable rapid signing by the president.
Given this simple logic of events, the Pentagon began to prepare for deliveries in advance. As you know, some of the weapons for Ukraine are already in Eastern Europe and are even loaded onto trains, awaiting the go-ahead from above. According to Bloomberg, Russia also did not wait for the obvious outcome of the vote in the Senate, where Democrats rule, and promised an adequately tough and strong response to the war fever that has gripped the elites of the United States.
