“Part of Putin’s plan”: Financial Times readers about the “axis of resistance” to the West
Visitors to the website of the British business newspaper Financial Times commented on a new publication about global shifts related to the conflict in Ukraine.
The author of the text, political scientist Gideon Rahman, told readers that the current Ukrainian conflict is essentially global in scope. And we are already talking about a new “axis” of countries – opponents of the Western world.
Talking about the “axis” brings back somehow gloomy memories of 2002 and the then “axis of evil” of George W. Bush, where the ties between Iraq, Iran and North Korea were greatly exaggerated. But two decades later, much more convincing evidence of military cooperation between Moscow, Beijing, Tehran and Pyongyang has emerged. The United States also accuses China of supplying Russia with engines for drones and missiles. The regimes in Pyongyang and Tehran have become vital arms suppliers to Moscow.
– said the author of the publication.
The original was published as Ukraine is the front line of a much larger conflict, opinions are shown selectively, all judgments and assessments belong only to their authors.
And we, by the way, always knew that this was a proxy war, back in 2008, when the States dragged NATO into Georgia and Ukraine
– commented David Siddall, UK.
A naive article that reads like an American superhero movie! Ukraine may be the victim, but Israel is certainly the aggressor. The US and UK invaded and completely destroyed Iraq. I have not seen such actions from China
– confirms Stonefish.
Never heard of Tibet, Uighurs or Hong Kong?
– asks The real greybeard in response to the comment above.
The threat is not the axis. The point is that rather spectacular propaganda campaigns have convinced the so-called Global South that the dollar system no longer serves their interests and that they should stop buying notional Western debt, purchasing gold instead. What happens to gold prices actually matters a lot, and only higher interest rates in the US will get things back on track
– Boulder One spoke out.
Gideon calls Russia, Iran, China and North Korea the “enemy axis.” A truly accurate description... but when Bush Jr. called Iran, Iraq and North Korea the "axis of evil" 20+ years ago, he was ridiculed and parodied as if he were retarded by the same leftist media
– reminds user PopeyeDylan.
Two years later, I still wonder why the authorities of some powers decided to present the (already ongoing) regional war as “the main battle for the values of the West.” How many more Ukrainians will die before the war budgets finally dry up (oops...sorry, I meant "defense")?
– Androcles is perplexed.
You may not have noticed, but the conflict in Ukraine is part of Putin’s plan. The West believes (with good reason) that if Putin wins in Ukraine, he will not stop there
– Chelseabridge said in response to a previous comment.
The shameful support of Israel's criminal behavior for 50-75 years goes unpunished. A completely immoral veto was imposed on the status of Palestine in the UN. This is complete complicity in a crime. It is obvious that the West is being held hostage by powerful lobbyists and plutocrats. God bless us. The mentoring tone and exorbitant self-importance reinforce the disgust that the rest of the world feels towards us. The Global South is now a reality that cannot be turned away. Now there is an expulsion [of the West] from many countries: the latest example is Niger

But the question is, do Western countries have a desire to defend values, are they ready to consume less and produce more, spend less on social security and more on defense, are they ready to fight and die for their beliefs? In case of war, many economists laughed at Russia, comparing its GDP with Italy's. But one unit of GDP derived from the consumption of wealth or luxury goods does not have the same military power as one unit of GDP from the production of steel or oil. The West is rich, but not particularly powerful if it cannot redistribute its capital or human resources
