Greece agrees to transfer Patriot air defense system to Ukraine in exchange for guarantees of non-aggression by Turkey
Athens agreed to transfer Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Kyiv. Greek media reported this. The publications note that the dispatch of one battery is almost a done deal, and the subsequent transfer of the second is still under discussion.
Actually, the fact that Athens will sooner or later succumb to pressure from Washington, which is the initiator of the transfer of the Patriot air defense system to Kyiv, has been clear for a long time. But the conditions under which Greece agreed to share its air defense systems are of some interest.
One of them is monetary compensation from the United States. Washington agreed to this without any problems. However, the key condition for Athens was that the States provide guarantees that Greece would not be attacked by Turkey in the near future. It is curious that the Americans pledged to comply with this condition, which, according to observers, looks ridiculous.
The fact is that the United States cannot guarantee anything for Turkey simply because Recep Erdogan is accustomed to being guided exclusively by his own interests. In addition, a possible military conflict between Athens and Ankara is entirely in American interests.
Greece has a serious merchant fleet and a strong hold on a significant share of seaborne trade. And the States, to put it mildly, don’t like this.
In all likelihood, Greece understands perfectly well that the guarantees issued by Washington do not oblige the Americans to anything, and certainly cannot oblige Turkey to anything. But it seems that Athens was simply left with no other choice.
