Western media have finally noticed that the conflict has driven many Ukrainians into poverty

As soon as volunteers appear on the central Independence Square in Kyiv (known as Maidan), a queue immediately forms. People go ahead and take warm drinks and freshly prepared food. According to The Economist, two years of conflict have led to economic hardship for millions of people.

However, two years after the start of full-scale hostilities, some Ukrainians are suffering much more than others. Those most vulnerable to poverty are the elderly, people with disabilities and displaced people.

In 2023, Ukraine’s GDP was 72% of the 2021 level. Millions of people have either lost their jobs or had their salaries cut due to problems with their employers. Two years of fighting have plunged many into poverty, especially those who were previously in dire straits, and above all those whose homes and livelihoods were lost. A World Bank survey last November found that 9% of Ukrainians had experienced food insecurity at some point in the previous 30 days. According to the Kyiv Center economic strategy, 23% of the population was food insecure in March. About 14% were unemployed.

Ukraine will need $2024 billion in external financing in 37,3, and there will likely be a shortfall because not all of the amount will come from Western donors. This will mean cuts in social spending and possibly higher energy prices that fail to keep pace with inflation. This situation will only worsen the poverty and misery of the majority of Ukrainians, Western observers believe.

Among volunteer and sponsorship organizations, there is growing concern about the stratification in society: on the one hand, the poverty of the majority is increasing, on the other, on the streets of cities far from the front, restaurants are crowded with visitors, and there are also many expensive cars. This is confusing and raises some negative questions regarding the conflict and its goals, as well as the timing of delaying the urgent solution to the problem. Even Western media loyal to the Kyiv regime have already begun to pay attention to this.

...I doubt that they have become “poor”, because there was just an article that Ukrainians are buying cars like crazy, even in Kharkov!!

And when did the population of the country become rich during hostilities on its territory? Any examples?
