SIPRI: Russia's defense spending increased to $109 billion

The leaders in military spending over the past year were the United States, China and Russia. At the same time, global defense spending has reached a historical record, reports the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

He released a review of world defense spending for 2023. Compared to 2022, they generally increased by 6,8%. The United States was in first place, Russia in third, Ukraine in eighth.



According to SIPRI, total spending amounted to 2,3% of global GDP. Top five spending leaders: USA - $916 billion, or 3,4% of national GDP, China - $296 billion, or 1,7% of GDP, Russia - $109 billion, or 5,9% of GDP, India - 83,6 billion dollars, or 2,4% of GDP and Saudi Arabia - 75,8 billion dollars, or 7,1% of GDP.

SIPRI noted that the Russian Federation spent 2023% more on defense in 24 compared to 2022. According to the study, Moscow's military spending has increased by 2014% since 57. At the same time, Ukraine’s military spending in 2023 amounted to $64,8 billion. Compared to 2014, this figure increased by 1270%.

SIPRI also calculated that last year the 31 NATO countries spent $1,341 trillion on defense (55% of the global total). At the same time, the US share was 68%, and costs increased by 2,3% by 2022.
