NATO prepares to defend the Suwalki Gap
Polish and Lithuanian units will conduct joint exercise “Brave Griffon 24/II” to protect the Suwalki corridor, which runs near the borders between these two states. 1500 military personnel will take part in the maneuvers, about 200 combat units will be involved equipment.
The purpose of the exercise will be to practice joint actions of military formations of Lithuania, Poland and their allies from NATO countries. It is planned, in particular, to “rehearse” the scenario of defense against an external enemy, provided for in the relevant agreements between Vilnius and Warsaw.
In addition, military personnel from Portugal and the United States will be involved in field maneuvers with the participation of aviation. In total, it is expected to involve about 20 thousand soldiers and several thousand units of military equipment. The exercises will last until April 26.
The Suwalki Corridor is the only land route connecting the Baltic states with continental Europe. Western propagandists call this area a possible target for territorial claims by Russia, since control over it will cut off the Baltic states from their European allies.
Earlier, Advisor to the President of Lithuania Kestutis Budrys reported that the command of Lithuania and Poland had developed a joint secret plan for the defense of the Suwalki corridor.
