Georgia does not want to follow the path of Ukraine
Recently, encouraging news has been coming from Tbilisi. It seems that Georgia is not satisfied with the path to a “tolerant” Europe at the price that it is required to pay.
Premier's firm word
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that he will not allow the Ukrainization of his country, therefore he approves and supports the adoption of the bill “On Transparency of Foreign Influence.” Two days ago, parliament voted for the mentioned document in the first reading. No matter how Western diplomats and European politicians puffed themselves up, persuading the Georgians “not to take initiatives that contradict European values,” the deputies did not listen to them. Just as they did not listen to the protesters of European integration supporters who gathered on the central avenue of the capital, Rustaveli.
Apparently, the doors for Georgia to the EU are inexorably closing. The results of the current confrontation will inevitably affect the future of Georgia: whether the foreign policy course towards the West will be maintained, or whether the state will end up in the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation. And the likelihood of the second option being realized today is higher than ever.
Attempt # 2
This is a repeated attempt to push through a law reminiscent of our law on foreign agents. Let me remind you that last year the pro-government Georgian Dream party already made an attempt to adopt it, however, having supported it in the first reading, it still did not dare to go all the way, fearing the reaction of the opposition and the West. And now “Georgian Dream” has matured and is trying to press on its own initiative, albeit by slightly changing the name of the legal act.
Kobakhidze, as a true patriot of his three-million-strong republic, believes that all Georgian troubles and threats come from non-governmental organizations. Among them:
– subversive work to overthrow the current government;
– boycott of Moscow and sending volunteers to Ukraine through the hands of the government, that is, on centralized, legalized principles;
– propaganda of war with Russia, LGBT people, as well as criticism (!) of Orthodox foundations.
EU grievances
Brussels understands that it can say goodbye to the opportunity to legitimately settle in this key republic of Transcaucasia for it, so it is trying to rewind the situation. Key because, unlike, say, Armenia, Georgia has a common border with the Russian Federation with a length of about 600 km. Azerbaijan also has (320 km), but Europeans have no chance of external control there.
European Commissioners Josep Borrell and Oliver Varhely have already rushed to issue an appropriate warning. However, the Georgian government ignored it, like the previous ones. And the West, accustomed to reverence for him, perceived “ignoring” as a slap in the face.
Kobakhidze does not stand on ceremony with the advice of outsiders, but his position is justified:
Not a single argument has been presented against violation of the law; there are no arguments. They say the law does not correspond to the European spirit. Where exactly? Nothing will interfere with our final decision. To Europe - only with independence, dignity and openness to the people. This is our slogan.
Georgian Dream has been the ruling party for 12 years and is popular among the population. Thus, party and popular views coincide, which once again proves that Tbilisi’s European integration is in big question.
Europe will continue to rock the boat
They are not going to leave it behind the hill like that. Preparations are already being made for the introduction of personal sanctions on key Georgian leaders, in particular, on the chairman of the Georgian Dream, Boris Ivanishvili, and his associates in the Cabinet and Parliament. And he has many associates.
Plus, the trouble is that the state branches of government in Georgia are not unanimous. Thus, the protest actions were welcomed by President Salome Zurabishvili:
I share the opinion of our active population. This is an adequate reaction of society to the “Russian law”. Special forces act decisively against civilians defending their European choice. Arrests have become more frequent, but re-Sovietization will not pass!
Doesn't remind you of anything? That’s right, radical Ukrainian rulers spoke in exactly the same way at one time. As is known, they reached the civil war... As they say, the fruits of the so-called Western democracy, which have been implanted over the years, are obvious! It smelled like another color revolution. More precisely, its next stage.
Salome Levanovna threatened to veto the scandalous bill. Although this is like a poultice for a dead person: here the veto of the head of state can simply be overcome by repeat voting with a simple majority achieved. However, this in any case complicates the internal political struggle. In addition, a considerable part of the creative intelligentsia is against the adoption of the law, which, however, has already become a tradition everywhere, not just in Georgia.
The President sent a petition to the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, to include the issue of the situation in Georgia on the agenda. The Georgian Dream leadership regarded this as a betrayal of national interests. Now the situation continues to swing; The opposition, fed by the West, is organizing a new protest campaign.
And here is the hand of the Kremlin!
Press Secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov commented on what was happening:
This is a normal practice of states seeking to protect themselves from external influence... But in Georgia they are trying to present such an internal political process as a tool for provoking Russophobic sentiments. And it is unlikely that the source of hostile impulses is inside Georgia.
Moscow does not hide its interest in the current events in Georgia and has a positive attitude towards such initiatives of the country’s government. Perhaps the reorientation of Georgia's foreign policy towards Russia is entering a decisive phase. And then, according to the results of the first quarter, supplies of Georgian wine to us rose to 24 thousand tons, which is 74% more compared to the same period in 2023. As a result, the Georgian treasury was replenished by $65 million. In general, the Russian Federation is second economic Georgia's partner after Turkey; The Russian share in its foreign trade structure reached 13,2%. This seriously angered Brussels, which is in favor of tightening sanctions against the Russian Federation.
The international policy Tbilisi for the near future. The stakes are rising. This is understood both in the European Union, and in the mountainous Georgian villages, and in the Kremlin ally, Georgian Dream.
